Effectiveness of the leadership and management Requires improvement Quality of teaching, learning and assessment Requires improvement Personal development, behaviour and welfare Requires improvement Outcomes for children Requires improvement

p.1

This provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:

 The childminder does not use assessment effectively to accurately identify where children are in their learning and to help her plan appropriate and challenging activities that reflect children's interests and build on what they know and can do. Children do not make good progress in all areas of their learning.  The childminder does not share enough information about children's progress with parents or other providers, to provide a consistent approach to children's learning and to help involve parents effectively.  The childminder does not provide a broad range of opportunities to help children gain a greater awareness of similarities and differences between themselves and others.  The childminder does not reflect on the quality of her provision effectively to identify all areas that need improvement, to help ensure children reach good or better outcomes.

p.1

It has the following strengths

 The childminder forms positive relationships with children. She is kind and caring and children form secure emotional attachments with her.  The childminder has a good understanding of supporting children's good health. For instance, she ensures that children eat healthily and have daily exercise.  The childminder places a strong focus on children's safety. For example, she teaches children about road safety when on outings and practises the evacuation drill with them.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To meet the requirements of the early years foundation stage the provider must:

p.2

Due Date

 improve assessment and monitoring of children's development, to plan and provide activities that challenge children effectively and build on what they already know and can do, so that they make consistently good progress across all areas of learning 25/03/2017

p.2

Due Date

 share assessment information with parents and other providers involved with children so that they are kept up to date with children's progress, to provide a shared approach to children's learning. 25/03/2017

p.2

Due Date

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

Due Date

 increase opportunities for children to develop a greater awareness of the similarities and differences between themselves and others  develop the self-evaluation process to identify all areas for development and improvement.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector had a tour of the areas used for childminding inside and outside.  The inspector spoke with one parent and read feedback from others to gain their views.  The inspector examined a sample of policies, documents and children's records.  The inspector observed the childminder's interaction with children during play and they evaluated an activity together.  The inspector discussed the childminder's self-evaluation process.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management requires improvement

The childminder has addressed some of the weaknesses identified at her last inspection. For example, she now keeps accurate records of children's attendance and has updated her safeguarding knowledge. However, improvements are inconsistent as the childminder does not monitor and evaluate the quality of her provision effectively. She does not identify all areas to improve to raise the quality of teaching, learning and assessment so that all children make better progress. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder is aware of the signs and the procedures to follow if she has any concerns about a child's welfare.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement

The childminder makes some observations of children's learning. However, she lacks a clear awareness of how to use the information to accurately assess and plan for what children need to learn next. For example, she does not always plan activities that engage all children effectively and this hinders children's progress. Nevertheless, children make some independent choices in their play from the activities the childminder provides. For example, they show interest in farm animals and enjoy looking at books. The childminder introduces mathematics well. For example, she counts with children and encourages them to match and sort items. The childminder includes children in discussions and repeats words for them to hear, which helps support their language development.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement

The childminder updates parents about their children's day. However, she does not consistently share information about children's progress with parents or other providers effectively, to provide continuity in their learning and to keep parents well informed. The childminder provides lots of attention and support to children and they feel safe and secure. Children begin to learn about expected behaviour. For instance, the childminder reminds children to share and to be kind. The childminder ensures that children get good opportunities for fresh air and outdoor play, which helps to support their physical well- being effectively. The childminder develops children's awareness of the local area when on outings. However, she does not build on this to help children gain a greater awareness of the similarities and differences between themselves and others in society.

p.3

Outcomes for children require improvement

Children do not consistently make good progress because their learning needs are not fully met. Nonetheless, children develop confidence and a good understanding of personal care. For example, they learn about the importance of washing and drying their hands before eating. Children develop an awareness of numbers, counting and early literacy. They gain some of the skills they need for the next stage in learning and school.
