This provision is good

 Children form strong relationships with the caring and attentive childminder. The childminder organises her home well, providing a safe and stimulating environment.  The childminder supports children's learning well. Children make good progress in readiness for the next stage of their learning and development.  Children's good health and well-being are promoted well. They learn about good hygiene practices and participate in a variety of physical activities, both in the garden and in the local community.  The childminder evaluates her practice effectively to identify areas for improvement. For example, she has recently developed the outdoor area so children can have increased access to outdoor play.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not obtain enough information from parents about their children's abilities when they join her setting to help her plan suitably challenging activities for children from the start.  The childminder has not established relationships with other early years settings that children attend successfully to share information and provide a more consistent approach to their care and learning.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 obtain more information from parents about their children's abilities when they join the setting to help plan suitably challenging activities for children from the start of the placement  establish effective partnerships with other early years settings that children attend to consistently share information about children's care and learning.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed teaching practice and conducted a joint observation with the childminder.  The inspector viewed the areas used for childminding and held discussions with the childminder.  The inspector looked at the documents available, including children's records.  The inspector took account of the views of parents through written feedback provided by the childminder.  The inspector discussed with the childminder her methods for self-evaluation.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a good understanding of how to keep children safe. She knows the appropriate action to take if she has concerns about a child's welfare. Good policies, procedures and supporting documentation is in place that underpins the efficient management of her setting. The childminder makes good use of training courses and meets with other childcare professionals to extend her skills. For example, she has completed training on the latest legislation to safeguard and protect children. Partnerships with parents are good. Parents report that they are very happy with the service the childminder provides and that they are kept up to date with their children's progress on a daily basis.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder completes observations of children to a good standard and uses these to plan the next steps in their learning. She accurately assesses and monitors children's progress so that any gaps in their learning are quickly identified and addressed. Children become confident communicators. The childminder shows genuine interest in what children have to say and actively listens to them. For example, children excitedly recall holidays they have been on. The childminder brings stories to life and children enthusiastically join in, talking about the pictures and characters. Children's mathematical development is well supported. For example, they count the number of animals in the zoo they are building.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder provides a secure and welcoming environment. She is patient, kind and attentive to children. She helps them to develop their understanding of how to tolerate and respect one another's differences well. For example, she encourages older children to include younger ones in activities. The childminder praises children's efforts to help boost their confidence and self-esteem. She organises her home well, allowing children to freely access resources and make their own choice about when to play outdoors. The childminder frequently takes children on a range of outings, such as local toddler groups or the library. They meet other people and develop an understanding of the world around them.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children make good progress in relation to their starting points. They enjoy learning and confidently explore their surroundings. They concentrate well and persevere with difficult tasks, such as finishing jigsaw puzzles. They develop good physical skills and use ride-on toys confidently. Children are developing the skills they need for their next stage of learning, including their eventual move on to school.
