p.1

3

Effectiveness of the leadership and management Requires improvement Quality of teaching, learning and assessment Requires improvement Personal development, behaviour and welfare Requires improvement Outcomes for children Requires improvement

p.1

This provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:

 The childminder has not yet fully embedded recent improvements made in how she monitors children's development. As a result, she does not yet have a clear picture of the progress children are making towards the early learning goals.  The childminder does not always plan activities and experiences to meet children's individual needs to ensure they make good progress in their learning.  The childminder does not seek enough information from other settings children attend about their assessments of children's progress, and so does not ensure consistency in approach towards supporting their learning.  The childminder has taken steps to evaluate her practice and identified areas where she could improve on the learning and experiences for children. However, plans have not yet been put in place to ensure improvements are made.

p.1

It has the following strengths

 The childminder has positive partnerships with parents, ensuring they have regular feedback about the care and activities provided to their children during the day.  The childminder gathers detailed information from parents about children's interests and routines prior to them starting to make sure she can meet their individual care needs. This ensures children settle into their new surroundings quickly.  The childminder has formed warm relationships with children and is attentive to their needs. As a result, they are confident, happy and self-assured in their environment.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To meet the requirements of the early years foundation stage the provider must:

p.2

Due Date

 further embed the arrangements in place for the monitoring and assessment of children's learning, so that you have a clearer understanding of the progress they are making towards the early learning goals 05/01/2018

p.2

Due Date

 improve the systems in place for the planning of children's learning to ensure that activities and resources provide appropriate levels of challenge and meet the individual needs of all children 05/01/2018

p.2

Due Date

 improve the sharing of information and communication with providers of other settings that children attend to provide consistency in teaching and learning 05/01/2018

p.2

Due Date

 implement focused plans from reviews of practice, to improve the quality of teaching, and support children’s learning. 01/12/2017

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the quality of teaching and the impact this has on children's learning.  The inspector looked at relevant documentation, such as records of children's learning and policies and procedures.  The inspector viewed areas of the home and garden used for childminding to assess how well the childminder keeps children safe.  The inspector spoke to the childminder during the inspection to assess how well she plans for children's learning.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management requires improvement

The childminder has made some improvements and sought additional training to improve her knowledge and practice since the last inspection. However, due to changes in the number of children on roll and frequency of care provided, these improvements are not fully embedded or effective. The childminder has started to evaluate her own practice and is clear on areas where improvements could be made, but has not yet put clear plans in place to address these. As a result, the quality of teaching is not yet good. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has an up-to-date knowledge of safeguarding issues. For example, she is clear about how she would identify and take steps to protect a child who might be at risk of exposure to extremism.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement

The childminder has made recent improvements to the way she makes observations and assessments of children's learning but this is not yet fully effective. As a result, she does not always have a clear picture of the stage children are at in their development, or plan sufficiently well for the next steps in their learning and to meet their individual needs. At times, children do not spend enough time engaged in meaningful activities to help support their learning and maximise the amount of progress they can make. The childminder now actively seeks information from parents about what their children know and can do when they first start at the setting. The childminder engages children in discussion and asks some questions during activities. This helps support children with their language development in readiness for school.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement

The childminder does not always provide a stimulating environment for children due to weaknesses in the planning of activities. Although children enjoy exploring the resources, they are not always organised to meet their individual needs. As a result, their levels of concentration and motivation to learn are not sustained. Children learn how to keep themselves safe while in the childminder's care. For example, they participate in regular fire drills and talk about how to safely cross the road when walking to and from pre- school. The childminder makes sure that she provides a safe, secure and clean environment for children to play in while in her care. As a result children's health and well- being are supported well.

p.3

Outcomes for children require improvement

Children’s progress is limited as the childminder is not yet using her assessments of children’s learning effectively in her practice. They are able to independently explore the wide range of resources available. They have opportunities to make marks on the chalkboard, and learn about shapes as the childminder challenges them to draw a triangle or a circle. They enjoy playing with interactive toys, learning new vocabulary as they talk about the sounds they make.
