Effectiveness of the leadership and management Requires improvement Quality of teaching, learning and assessment Requires improvement Personal development, behaviour and welfare Requires improvement Outcomes for children Requires improvement
p.1
This provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:
The childminder does not evaluate the impact of her own and her assistant's practice effectively. She does not make best use of professional development opportunities to help raise the quality of teaching to a consistently good level. Teaching is not consistently good. The childminder and her assistant do not use information from the assessments of children's progress well enough to understand children's level of achievement and challenge their learning suitably. In particular, in children's mathematics and literacy development. The childminder does not consistently provide clear guidance to help children learn self- control and cooperation. On occasions, during activities, the childminder and her assistant do not focus sharply on those children who are reluctant to engage and speak, or to help them make good progress.
p.1
It has the following strengths
The childminder develops close relationships with children and their parents, and she keeps parents up to date about their children's care and achievements. The childminder and her assistant have a good knowledge of child protection issues and wider safeguarding issues. Children who attend before and after school benefit from a relaxed approach where they can choose what to do inside and outdoors.

What the setting needs to do to improve further
To meet the requirements of the early years foundation stage the provider must:

improve the programme of professional development opportunities to help raise the quality of teaching to a consistently good level 30/11/2017
p.2
Due Date
improve the use of the information gained from assessing children's progress to help understand children's level of achievement and plan suitably challenging activities, in particular, in their mathematics and literacy development. 30/11/2017

Due Date
To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:
p.2
Due Date
consistently provide clear guidance to help children learn self-control and cooperation, to improve their behaviour focus more sharply on those children who are reluctant to engage and speak during activities to help them make the best possible progress.
p.2
Inspection activities
The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities inside and outdoors, and assessed the impact this has on children's learning. The inspector completed a joint evaluation of an activity with the childminder. The inspector held a number of discussions with the childminder and assistant. She looked at relevant documentation and evidence of the suitability of persons living in the household. The inspector took account of the views of parents through written feedback provided.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management requires improvement
Current professional development opportunities do not focus sharply on raising the overall quality of teaching to good. Teaching still requires improvement, as the childminder does not focus precisely enough on raising her understanding of how to promote children's literacy and mathematics development well enough. That said, some progress has been made since the last inspection. For example, the childminder works closely with parents when their children start, to find out what their children can do to help assess their development. In addition, the childminder and her assistant have attended some training to increase their knowledge of observation and assessment, working with parents and leadership. The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder and assistant have a strong understanding of child protection issues and are clear of the procedures to follow if they have any welfare concerns.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement
The childminder and assistant regularly observe children and identify their next steps in learning. However, they do not consistently use this information precisely enough when planning activities, and on occasions, activities are not suitable in relation to children's level of development. For example, during the inspection, a musical instrument activity to encourage children to follow pattern and rhythm was too complicated for the group of children. Children quickly lost interest and they did not show good levels of involvement. Overall, the childminder and assistant suitably engage with children as they play, and introduce new words and concepts. However, they do not consistently focus on and motivate those children who are reluctant to take part and speak.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement
On occasions, children do not show good levels of self-control and cooperation. During these incidents, the childminder does not consistently offer children the guidance and direction they need to help them behave well. Despite this, the childminder knows the children's personalities and meets their individual care needs. She works closely with parents to meet their wishes and updates them about their child's day. The childminder takes daily walks with the children. For example, she teaches children about road safety and they regularly practise the fire evacuation procedure. The childminder and assistant encourage children and parents to consider healthy options, such as choices in children's lunch boxes. Children benefit from plenty of opportunities to be outdoors in the fresh air and have a challenging range of resources to increase their physical development.
p.3
Outcomes for children require improvement
Not enough children make consistently good levels of progress from their starting points. That said, children show an interest in the natural world while in the garden and on walks as they collect natural items. Children begin to show an interest in books and enjoy singing sessions. They enjoy exploring and investigating the programmable toys, items in baskets, and use their imagination as they play with the sand and dough. Children steadily acquire the basic skills required in preparation for school.
