Effectiveness of the leadership and management Requires improvement Quality of teaching, learning and assessment Requires improvement Personal development, behaviour and welfare Requires improvement Outcomes for children Requires improvement
p.1
This provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:
The childminder does not effectively monitor her assistants' quality of teaching to consistently make the most of all learning opportunities and experiences to help children make good progress. The childminder does not make the most of the available resources to consistently interest, stimulate and motivate children to play and learn. The childminder does not effectively use self-evaluation to help her identify areas of practice which require improvement.
p.1
It has the following strengths
Children have close bonds with the childminder and her assistants, helping them to feel safe, secure and supporting their emotional well-being. The childminder works well with parents and provides regular opportunities for them to contribute to their children's learning. Parents share observations from home and are involved in helping to decide on the next steps in their children's learning. The childminder knows the children well and is aware of their likes and interests. She observes them and records these electronically. The childminder completes assessments to help monitor their progress. There are appropriate partnerships with local schools, outside agencies and other professionals which help to support continuity in children's care.

What the setting needs to do to improve further

make greater use of self-evaluation to identify weaknesses in practice to raise and target outcomes for children.
p.2
Inspection activities
The inspector observed the quality of teaching and assessed the impact this has on children's learning. The inspector held discussions with the childminder and looked at evidence of the suitability of the childminder's assistants and other adults living in the household. The inspector conducted a joint observation with the childminder and assessed the accuracy of her evaluation. The inspector took account of the views of parents through discussions and reading the written feedback provided. The inspector spoke to children during the inspection.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management requires improvement
The childminder does not effectively reflect on and evaluate her provision to help identify priorities for improvement. She monitors her assistants' practice and makes sure they are aware of their roles and responsibilities. However, she has not identified the weaknesses in the quality of teaching to help ensure that children are consistently provided with high- quality experiences. The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder and her assistants are suitably trained and have a sound understanding of the safeguarding policy and procedures. They understand what action to take if they have concerns about the welfare of a child in their care, helping to keep children safe. The childminder attends training to help ensure that she is aware of recent legislation. She follows appropriate recruitment procedures and has provided Ofsted with the required information about the assistants.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement
The quality of teaching is variable. The childminder and her assistants' interactions with children are not consistently strong. At times, they miss opportunities to extend children's learning. For example, the childminder arranges a colour matching game which is more appropriate for the younger children. Older children initially take part but quickly lose focus and look around for something else to do. In addition, the childminder does not consistently make effective use of the extensive range of resources to provide exciting, stimulating and imaginative activities. For example, she set up a role-play shop activity which children enjoyed playing with. However, the childminder missed the opportunity to add additional resources to help extend children's play and imaginative skills further.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement
The inconsistencies in the quality of teaching and the effective, imaginative use of available resources do not keep children fully motivated and interested. At times, they become distracted and lose concentration. However, the childminder establishes close emotional attachments with the children. She and her assistants respond quickly to children's emotional and physical needs. For example, they recognise when children are hungry and becoming tired and adapt the routine to allow them to eat earlier before going to sleep. Children follow good hygiene practices. They have daily opportunities for exercise and fresh air, for example, children regularly visit the local park and play outside. These help to support children's health and physical well-being.
p.3
Outcomes for children require improvement
The weaknesses in the quality of teaching do not support children to make consistently good progress. However, children acquire some of the basic skills needed for their future learning. For example, they learn to be independent and carry out tasks for themselves, such as pouring their drinks. Children make friends and confidently share their thoughts, ideas and feelings with each other and the childminder. They show concern for their friends when they are upset or unwell and take turns in group activities.
