Effectiveness of the leadership and management Requires improvement Quality of teaching, learning and assessment Requires improvement Personal development, behaviour and welfare Requires improvement Outcomes for children Requires improvement

p.1

This provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:

 The childminder has not notified Ofsted in a timely way of members of her family living in the childminding premises, in order to enable suitability checks to be made.  The childminder makes some observations and assessments of children's progress. However, she and her assistants do not use the information well enough to take account of children's individual interests, abilities and learning needs.  The quality of teaching is not consistent. The childminder and her assistants miss opportunities to extend children's learning during their play.  The childminder is not using self-evaluation effectively to identify and address weaknesses in the provision.

p.1

It has the following strengths

 Children settle well. They have good relationships with the childminder, her co- childminder and the assistants.  There is a positive partnership with parents, who comment that the childminder is trustworthy and offers a personalised service.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To meet the requirements of the early years foundation stage and the Childcare Register the provider must:

p.2

Due Date

 provide Ofsted with the required information so that checks can be made to ensure that people living or working on the childminding premises are suitable 30/11/2016

p.2

Due Date

 ensure that observation and assessment are used effectively to precisely identify the next steps in children's learning and plan challenging experiences that promote children's good progress. 30/11/2016

p.2

Due Date

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

Due Date

 develop self-evaluation so that it effectively identifies areas for improvement and promotes good outcomes for all children  make the most of children's learning opportunities in order to improve their understanding and promote more rapid progress.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed a specific activity with the childminder and discussed the learning outcomes for children.  The inspector observed the quality of the interactions between the childminder, her assistants and children.  The inspector looked at the premises and the resources available to children. She went on a walk to the park with children.  A sample of documentation was looked at, including children's records, some policies and procedures and records of attendance.  The inspector spoke to one parent at the inspection and took into account other parents' views through written comments.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management requires improvement

The childminder lacks some understanding of her responsibilities to meet the requirements of the early years foundation stage. She has not promptly informed Ofsted of adults moving into the home. This has led to some delay in obtaining the necessary suitability checks. However, the childminder is in the process of rectifying the situation. She reduces the risk to children by ensuring the people concerned have no unsupervised access or any role in caring for children. Other aspects of children's safety are appropriately maintained. The childminder keeps records of children's attendance and obtains permission to give any medication. Arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder makes sure her co-childminder and the assistants have a suitable understanding of local safeguarding procedures. They have recently attended training and know how to refer a child who is at risk of harm. Self-evaluation is at an early stage and is not robust enough to identify and

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement

Children are offered activities that occupy them. However, their experiences are not well planned to reflect their individual interests and support the next steps in their learning. Additionally, the quality of teaching is variable. The childminder and her assistants are not alert to learning opportunities that arise during children's play. They do not always take time to ask children questions about their activities to extend their learning. That being said, some activities are enjoyable and worthwhile. For example, the childminder provides children with different coloured play dough and encourages them to feel and manipulate it into various shapes. They discuss the colours and the shapes they make, having fun and developing physical coordination. Children have opportunities to listen to music and enjoy story times. They use paints, crayons and pencils to develop their skills in making marks.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement

Children's welfare is not fully ensured due to unchecked adults living in the household. Nonetheless, children demonstrate they feel comfortable in the childminder's care. They chatter confidently to the adults around them and have good friendships with each other. The childminder collects detailed information from parents when children first start at the setting. This helps her to meet their initial care needs well. Children benefit from a healthy selection of snacks. They are encouraged to learn good hygiene habits, such as regular handwashing. The childminder provides children with some daily outdoor experiences to support their physical development, such as ring games.

p.3

Outcomes for children require improvement

Children are not supported to make good progress. However, they do learn some skills that support their future learning. They have conversations with each other and learn to express their own needs. Older children independently put on outdoor clothes ready for outings. They develop an interest in books and have a suitable selection to choose from. Children learn good manners and demonstrate they can share and take turns.
