This provision is good

 The childminder builds up a clear picture of all children in her care from their initial starting points. She uses her observations to monitor children to ensure that they all make good progress.  Children are confident and secure in the setting. Children demonstrate very good personal and social skills.  The childminder is very aware of the importance of preparing children for the next stage in their learning. She knows how she can support children to make sure they develop these key skills.  The childminder uses everyday activities and routine times as opportunities to teach children new skills or consolidate their learning.  Partnership working is good. The childminder has very good links with the local school that the children attend.  The childminder keeps up to date with early years practice and new initiatives. She has attended courses and meets with other practitioners in the locality.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 Systems for parents to contribute to self-evaluation are not yet fully embedded.  The childminder does not fully take account of the views of the children when deciding what could be improved at the setting.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 develop a wider range of ways for parents to provide their views of the setting that further enhance self-evaluation and secure continuous improvement  provide more opportunities to review and act upon the suggestions and ideas of the children.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed children's activities and viewed all areas of the home used by the children.  The inspector observed the quality of teaching and the impact this has on children's learning.  The inspector looked at children's assessments and the planning documentation.  The inspector spoke with the childminder and interacted with the children at appropriate times throughout the inspection.  The inspector checked evidence of suitability of all household members. She also looked at a sample of the childminder's policies and procedures and discussed her self- evaluation form and improvement plans.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder has a good understanding of her roles and responsibilities to safeguard children. She knows the local authority procedures to follow if she is concerned about a child's welfare. The childminder has made sure that she completes essential training in good time. This ensures that children's safety and well-being are promoted at all times. The childminder has clear priorities for improvement which relate to the children she cares for. However, she does not always take into account and act upon the views of parents and children when evaluating her provision.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

Children benefit from a wide range of play experiences to support their learning and development. The quality of the childminder's teaching is good. She follows children's lead and supports their interests, overall. Children respond enthusiastically and show a willingness to try things for themselves. For example, very young children show good determination and persistence when joining bricks together to build a tower and turning pages to share a book. The childminder plays alongside children and uses appropriate questions and language to help their understanding. This helps support children's development well. Children sing and babble happily to themselves as they play and giggle excitedly when they hear their favourite songs. Children enjoy lots of exciting experiences outdoors, in the garden and at local parks.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children settle very well with the childminder. She gathers information from their parents before they attend. This helps her to get to know them well. They are happy and have close attachments with the childminder. Children behave well. They begin to learn about boundaries from a young age and the childminder calmly encourages good behaviour to help children overcome their disputes. The childminder promotes healthy eating and lifestyles. She prepares healthy meals and snacks and offers children plenty of opportunities for exercise outside in the fresh air.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

The childminder effectively tracks children's progress and development. All children are making good progress from their starting points and are keen and active learners. They are emotionally well prepared for the next stage in their learning, including the move on to pre-school or school.
