the clear guidance and expectations the childminder provides.  Partnerships with parents are effective. The childminder gathers information from parents about children's development when they first start. Parents continue to contribute regularly to their children's daily diaries and learning journal books. They speak highly of the childminder and are very pleased with the progress their children make.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not yet gather the views of parents and children, to help create sharply focused targets to raise the quality of her provision to the highest level.  The childminder does not always use snack and meal times to increase children's awareness of healthy eating and the impact that foods can have on their bodies.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

 enhance the self-evaluation process to include the views of parents and children, and help raise the quality of provision to the highest level  focus more precisely during snack and meal times on helping children to understand the health benefits that different foods and drinks can have on their bodies.

p.2

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder understands how to keep children safe. She knows what action to take should an allegation be made about herself or another adult. A good range of policies and procedures underpins her effective practice. The childminder identifies her strengths and areas for improvement. She is proactive in implementing her action plans and has attended a range of training courses since her last inspection. This has a positive impact on the children's learning. The childminder is committed to continuous improvement and has identified other training to extend her knowledge. The childminder monitors children's development to help ensure they make progress and to identify areas where specific help is needed. She carries out the progress check for children aged between two and three years. Parents are fully involved in this and are provided with a written summary of their children's development.

p.3

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The childminder works closely with health visitors to review children's development.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

Young children display excellent communication and language skills. They talk expressively in sentences about the difference between the slugs and snails they find in the garden. The childminder asks thought-provoking questions to challenge children's thinking and skilfully builds on children's knowledge of windmills. Children spontaneously sing a wide range of songs. They do this with great enthusiasm. Parents comment how their children sing songs at home that they have learnt with the childminder. Children enjoy stories that the childminder reads. They understand how to use books and accurately predict what will happen in familiar stories. Children work hard and persist in completing alphabet jigsaws. The childminder supports their growing literacy skills well. Older children confidently identify the initial letter sounds that objects begin with. The childminder supports and extends children's imaginative ideas as she participates in the tea party they create.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder offers a warm, welcoming and stimulating environment for children. She provides a range of resources and activities, to help children develop their understanding of people who are different to them. Children talk with confidence to visitors about their hands. They describe how they have got, 'Two little fingers and two thumbs' on each hand. This helps to demonstrate how safe children feel in the childminder's care. Children are very motivated in managing their own personal care needs and wash their hands after visiting the bathroom and after stroking the childminder's cat. Children's physical well- being is promoted well. Children move freely pretending to be butterflies and challenge their own abilities when playing outdoors as they jump competently down the steps.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

All children make at least good progress and some make rapid progress in their learning. Children display a thirst for knowledge. They are curious and interested in learning. Older children are developing good mathematical understanding. They recognise numbers to 10 and use mathematical language to describe quantities and size. Children are developing the skills and attitudes they need for their future and are well prepared for school.
