p.1
This provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:
The childminder has failed to maintain a record of children's attendance which is a requirement of registration. Required record keeping is disorganised. This means that on some occasions the childminder is unable to produce documentation such as information about individual children. The childminder does not yet make effective use of self-evaluation to regularly reflect on her practice and identify areas that are weaker. Assessment arrangements are not fully used to identify gaps in children's learning and plan challenging activities for their future learning.
p.1
It has the following strengths
The childminder has good relationships with the children in her care. They form strong bonds with her and her assistant and confidently ask for help or support. Children behave well. Children particularly enjoy art and craft activities planned for by the childminder, as well as the opportunities to dress up and engage in imaginary play. The childminder makes good use of local parks, playgrounds and libraries to extend children's play and learning. The childminder has attended recent training and participated in local childcare forums to help improve her skills and knowledge.

p.2
Inspection activities
The inspector held discussions with the childminder about her knowledge of how to keep children safe and about her legal responsibilities as a childminder. The inspector observed quality of teaching and interactions with children and assessed the impact this has on children's learning. The inspector sampled documentation, policies in relation to childminding practice and children's records and assessment information. The inspector looked at all areas of the home used by children in the childminder's care. The inspector held discussions with the childminder's assistant and spoke to children present at the time of inspection.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management requires improvement
The childminder has attended recent safeguarding training and professional forums to help develop her skills and knowledge. She has taken appropriate action to address weaknesses highlighted at her last inspection. However, she does not yet make effective use of self-evaluation to identify what she needs to do to sustain improvements in her practice and to make continued progress. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a sound knowledge of child protection matters and knows what action to take in the event of a concern. She has built effective partnerships with parents and other early years settings that children attend. This helps to ensure consistency in children's care. However, she does not ensure that all required records, such as the attendance register, are maintained.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement
The childminder is developing her confidence in using systems to observe and assess children. This is beginning to help her monitor children's progress. However, she does not use this information to plan for their future learning. The childminder plans activities based on children's interests. For example, she provides a range of dressing up props based on children's favourite characters. They eagerly put on gowns and tiaras and initiate games of 'make-believe'. The childminder readily engages children in conversation that helps support their communication and language skills. She provides opportunities for children to share stories, songs and rhymes. Children use mathematical language routinely. For example, when a child puts a folded piece of paper on her head she laughs and say she 'looks like a triangle'.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement
The childminder knows parent's contact details and personal information about minded children, however at the time of the inspection she did not have these recorded. Children behave well. The childminder and her assistant build strong bonds with the children. This helps to promote children's well-being and confidence. Children enjoy regular outings to local parks and playgrounds where they exercise on large apparatus. Trips to the library help foster an interest in reading and provide opportunities for children to borrow books to share at home. Children are proud of their achievements. They eagerly talk about art work they have created which is prominently displayed on the walls around the childminder's home. The childminder and her assistant praise the children well for their efforts. They encourage them to concentrate and complete tasks and to take responsibility for their actions.
p.3
Outcomes for children require improvement
Overall, children are making steady progress. However, the current systems for assessment are weak. They record what children do but are not used to make precise assessments of children's development or to plan for their future learning. Children are happy and sociable. They are independent and communicate well. The childminder and her assistant help prepare them for when they move on to school. Children engage well in the activities provided.
