This provision is good

 The qualified childminder has a good understanding of how children learn. She gets to know the children well and plans suitably challenging activities to help them achieve next steps in their learning. All children make good progress.  Children feel safe and secure in the childminder's care. She provides a warm, welcoming and family-orientated environment. Children have consistent boundaries and familiar routines. The childminder forms close, caring bonds with children and is responsive to their individual needs. This has a positive effect on their emotional well- being.  The childminder forms effective partnerships with parents. She keeps them well informed about their children's day. The childminder observes children in their play and provides parents with an accurate record of their achievements. She provides parents with newsletters to inform them about forthcoming events. Parents are encouraged to

continue to share what they know about their child.  The childminder keeps up to date with developments in childcare practices and attends training courses whenever possible, to continue to build on the existing good quality provision. She regularly meets with other childminders to share good practice ideas. This has a positive impact on the learning experiences she offers children.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder has not fully developed partnership working with other early years settings that children also attend, to consistently support children in making the very best progress in all areas of learning.  The childminder does not consistently evaluate her assistant's performance, in order to rigorously monitor and build on the already good practice.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 strengthen the arrangements for working in partnership with other early years settings that children attend, sharing information to obtain a fuller picture of children's next steps and complement the good learning already taking place  extend the existing systems for the monitoring of staff performance to continue to strengthen and improve on good practice.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and assessed the impact this has on children's learning.  The inspector held discussions with the childminder and children at appropriate times throughout the inspection and carried out a focused observation.  The inspector looked at relevant documentation, such as the childminder's self- evaluation, planning documentation, records of children's learning and development, written risk assessments and a selection of policies and procedures  The inspector checked evidence of the suitability and qualifications of the childminder, her assistant and the suitability of all household members.  The inspector took account of parents' comments detailed in the records of children's learning and from information included in the childminder's own parent survey.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder and her assistant have a good understanding of safeguarding procedures. They know what to do if they have a concern about a child in their care. The childminder regularly monitors children's progress. Where gaps in children's development are identified, the childminder works with parents to put consistent approaches in place. The childminder evaluates her setting and seeks the views of parents through questionnaires. Parents provide very positive comments. They would happily recommend the childminder to others. The childminder monitors the practice of her assistant through informal discussions. However, there is scope to strengthen the performance management and monitoring systems further, to have a clear plan for building on the already good practice.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder provides a well resourced and stimulating environment that gives children plenty of choice in their play. Children of all ages are happy and settled as they confidently explore their environment. Babies have ample space to move around safely to practise their early walking skills which supports their physical development. Children of all ages actively participate in an exciting range of planned activities. For example, they enjoy finding out how things feel as they blow bubbles, play with water and explore small water beads. They are motivated and interested as they enthusiastically experiment with their hands and the resources provided. The childminder interacts purposefully with the children to support their learning and development. She listens well to the children and skilfully asks questions to challenge their thinking and extend their learning.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder works closely with parents to help new children to settle. Children demonstrate that they are very comfortable in their environment. The childminder ensures that ratios are met and children are supervised at all times. Children develop a practical sense of responsibility as they happily help to hand out plates and wash up after snack. They develop personal care skills and enjoy healthy snacks and meals. Children have daily opportunities for exercise and fresh air. This helps to promote their good health and supports their physical well-being. Risk assessments and daily checks of the premises and for outings are thorough. The childminder attends local groups with the children. This helps to extend their confidence as they meet other adults and children. Children learn about road safety rules when they are out with the childminder. The childminder supports children to be emotionally prepared for the move to school. They become familiar with

other settings when they accompany the childminder to collect older children from school.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children are well prepared for the next stage in their learning, such as school. They make independent choices in their play, listen well to instructions and learn to share and take turns. Children show great concentration as they spend time completing puzzles, rotating each piece to make them fit together. They enjoy looking at books independently. All children make good progress in their learning given their starting points and capabilities.
