This provision is good

 Children benefit from the care of an exceptionally positive and encouraging childminder. Children show they are extremely settled and secure, and form close and warm relationships with him.  The childminder knows the children well, which enables him to securely meet their needs, plan activities that follow their interests and help them make good progress.  Children's safety and welfare is a priority. The childminder fully understands his responsibilities concerning child protection. He is aware of the safeguarding procedures he needs to follow in order to keep children safe, including how to report any welfare concerns he may have about a child.  Partnerships with parents are positively encouraging. The childminder communicates well with parents to meet children's care and learning needs. For example, he uses a variety of ways to keep them updated, so they know how their children are progressing.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder's current system for monitoring children's learning does not always give him a full picture of some gaps in children's learning as they emerge, so he can address these more rapidly.  At times, children do not have every opportunity to freely express their creative ideas and improve their early writing skills.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 strengthen current processes for monitoring children's learning, particularly to obtain a more clearer understanding of any emerging gaps  increase opportunities for children to readily access resources to strengthen further their mark-making skills and to express their creative ideas.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector viewed all areas of the home used for childminding.  The inspector sampled some documents that the childminder uses for childminding.  The inspector held discussions with the childminder about his knowledge of the Early Years Foundation Stage requirements.  The inspector observed the childminder and children during play.  The inspector obtained written and verbal feedback from parents to gather their views of the provision.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The childminder has a good understanding of the Early Years Foundation Stage requirements. He keeps up to date with current practices, such as through training, which helps him to improve his knowledge continually. The childminder evaluates his practice well and involves parents in this process. He identifies areas for development effectively to help him improve children's learning experiences. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a good understanding of how to keep children safe from harm. For example, he checks his home daily and removes any potential hazards, so that children learn and play in a safe environment.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder has a good understanding of the learning and development requirements. He knows the children well, and plans thoughtful and challenging experiences that support their interests. The quality of the childminder's teaching is good. He adapts and changes activities to challenge and engage children of all ages in their play. The childminder has a good understanding of how to support children, including those who are learning to speak English as an additional language. All children make good progress in their communication skills. Children have opportunities to explore the local community and socialise with other children, for example, by attending local groups on a daily basis. Children engage in daily play outdoors, which supports their physical development.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are outstanding

The childminder is exceptionally good at promoting children's emotional well-being; he clearly understands children's individual needs. Children show high levels of confidence and self-worth. The childminder supervises the children at all times, which further aids their sense of security. He is very calm and consistent in his interaction, and children confidently approach him for support and comfort. The childminder encourages positive behaviour, such as by using age-appropriate rules, so all children play well together. The childminder provides a healthy and balanced diet for children to promote their physical well-being.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children make good progress in preparation for the next stage of their learning, including school. They enjoy the home-from-home environment, which helps them to feel secure, and confident to learn and explore.
