Effectiveness of the leadership and management Requires improvement Quality of teaching, learning and assessment Requires improvement Personal development, behaviour and welfare Requires improvement Outcomes for children Requires improvement

p.1

This provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:

 The quality of teaching is not consistently strong in the nursery, especially in the older children's room.  Occasionally, children are not given opportunities to learn new skills, as staff intervene too quickly and take over.  Staff do not always explain to children the importance of treating resources and their environment with care.

p.1

It has the following strengths

 The provider and manager are committed to improving the provision and have implemented several positive changes since the last inspection. They have worked closely with local authority advisers to address the actions raised at the last inspection.  Staff have positive working relationships with local schools and other professionals involved in children's care and learning. Parents spoken to on the day of the inspection were very positive about the nursery provision. Parents are kept well informed about children's progress from their starting points.  Clear procedures are in place to keep children safe. Staff are vigilant in protecting children from harm and understand their responsibilities in reporting any concerns that they may have.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To meet the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage the provider must:

p.2

Due Date

 ensure that ongoing supervision, support and training are effectively used to improve the quality of teaching in the nursery, with a strong focus on improving staff skills and knowledge in the older children's room. 23/10/2015

p.2

Due Date

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

Due Date

 ensure that all staff give children sufficient time to try for themselves when learning new skills, in order to help them become more confident and independent learners  teach children the importance of caring for resources and taking responsibility for their nursery environment.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and outdoors and assessed the impact this has on children's learning.  The inspector completed a joint observation with the nursery provider.  The inspector spoke to a small selection of parents during the inspection and took account of their views.  The inspector held a meeting with the nursery manager and provider. She looked at relevant documentation, such as the nursery's self-evaluation and evidence of the suitability of staff working in the nursery.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management requires improvement

Since the last inspection the provider and manager have focused on ensuring that statutory requirements are met. The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. All staff have attended a range of training opportunities to improve their skills and knowledge in supporting children's care and learning. Staff have implemented changes to planning, in response to recent training, in order to ensure that children's next steps in learning are clearly identified. The provider has also developed systems for staff supervision and appraisal. However, staff monitoring and training has not yet resulted in a consistently good level of teaching in the nursery, especially in the older children's room. Consequently, opportunities for some children to make the best possible progress towards the early learning goals are not maximised.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement

Most staff are well qualified and understand how young children learn. However, the quality of teaching is variable in the nursery. Some teaching is strong, especially in the younger children's room but some staff do not consistently support children's learning effectively. Staff plan a range of activities across the seven areas of learning, based on their observations of children. In the younger children's room, staff skilfully observe children's interests. They plan activities from their observations so that children are motivated and excited to learn. In the older children's room staff do not always encourage children to persevere when they encounter new challenges. Staff sometimes intervene too quickly and take over, therefore children are not given opportunities to learn new skills and become increasingly independent and confident learners. There are a good range of opportunities for children to learn about the people that make up their local community

and beyond, in order to help them develop an understanding of the wider world.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement

Children are beginning to develop the skills they need to learn. They make friends with the other children and have warm relationships with the staff. Children access a good range of resources independently, both inside and outside. There are daily opportunities to be outside, where children enjoy fresh air and physical exercise. The nursery provides a variety of snacks and meals that encourage children to develop healthy eating habits. Children generally behave well but occasionally some children do not treat resources and their environment with care. On these occasions, staff do not always explain to children about the importance of taking care of resources and their environment.

p.3

Outcomes for children require improvement

All children make progress, but some make better progress than others, because the quality of teaching is variable in the nursery. A new electronic tool for tracking children's progress has very recently been introduced, so the provider is starting to evaluate how well different groups of children are progressing over time. Children generally have the key skills to be ready for the next stage in their learning.
