Although the school is doing well there are still things it can improve. Your teachers are good at asking you questions that help you learn well and giving you time to share your ideas, but sometimes some of you need different questions that provide you with just the right amount of challenge. We have also asked teachers to make sure that they give you enough time in lessons to get on with your independent work. These are things that will make sure you all make the progress of which you are capable in every lesson. One more thing we have asked is for the leaders and managers of your school to help teachers share ideas with each other so that all your lessons are as good as the very best ones we saw.

Inspection of Westende Junior School, Wokingham, RG40 2EJ
We discovered that the school has many strengths. Perhaps the one that will interest you most is our judgement about the teaching. Almost all the lessons we observed were really good and some were outstanding. Your teachers are very skilled in finding imaginative ways to capture your interest and, for your part, you respond very well to the challenging tasks they set. It was good to see you assessing your own work and that of your classmates. You have a really good idea of what makes good writing and try to include the ‘VCOP’ (vocabulary, connectives, openers and punctuation) criteria. We felt that, because most of you are really good readers, you might also try to use some of the ways that authors use to engage their readers. We know some of you are already adopting a ‘magpie’ approach! We focused on writing because this is weaker than reading and mathematics, and we have set the school a target for improvement. That said, we saw some great work in mathematics, science

Text from letter to pupils explaining the findings of the inspection
29 May 2008 Dear Pupils Inspection of Emmbrook Junior School,Wokingham,RG41 1JR As you know, I visited your school recently I particularly enjoyed speaking to the school council and your afternoon assembly in which you showed me some of your achievements. My report says that yours is a satisfactory school. This means that some things are good but there are some aspects that could be better. I can see why you get on well with your headteacher and like your teachers a lot. They are very friendly and want the best for you. You rightly told me behaviour in your school is good, bullying is very rare and that you particularly liked the many clubs on offer. By the time you leave school you reach the standards expected for your age in English, mathematics and science which enables you to make a sound start to secondary school. However, the work you do in other subjects is often better. For example, the good opportunities you have to undertake research,

Thank you very much for telling us all about your school and for making us feel so welcome. I am writing now to tell you what we found. You and your parents believe that you have a good school and we agree with you. Most of you love coming to school because you know that you are exceptionally well looked after. Teaching is good so you make good progress and reach standards that are higher than most eleven-year-olds by the time you go to your secondary schools. You try your hardest in your work and you know that if you find things difficult the teachers and learning support assistants will help you. You are very good at assessing each other's work and using 'tickled pink' and 'green for growth' highlighters. Your behaviour is excellent and you take responsibility for lots
