- St Aidan's Catholic Primary School, Wigan10 Mar 2009Good
Winstanley, Wigan, Lancashire, WN3 6EE
Grade: 2
7 of 12 Inspection Report: St Aidan's Catholic Primary School, Wigan, 9–10 March 2009 equality well, practical steps to improve boys' writing are at an early stage. Good local authority support and excellent links with other schools, particularly a partner school, have helped leaders to stimulate more effective learning and an expectation of higher standards. Good opportunities are provided that allow pupils to study local and global issues. Plans are in place to enable pupil's further, first-hand experience of the rich diversity of cultures which exist beyond their immediate community. The governing body has increased its level of involvement in school. More consideration of information about standards and achievement give governors a good understanding of school performance and the ability to explore where improvement is still needed. 8 of 12 Inspection Report: St Aidan's Catholic Primary School, Wigan, 9–10 March 2009

for students’ attainment and progress. The school uses Wigan’s Pupil Referral Unit to provide alternative off-site provision for some students. The proportion of students that leave or join the school at times other than the start of Year 7 is well above the national average. This is mainly due to the closure of a local high school in September 2011 when over 130 students joined the school across Years 9, 10 and 11. The school is a member of the Wigan schools’ consortia. The school has achieved several awards in recognition of the quality of its work. These include the Eco Schools Silver Award, the Bronze Arts Award, Champion School for Musical Futures and the International Schools award. Following the death of the previous headteacher, a new headteacher was appointed in September 2013.

- Progress Schools Wigan13 Sept 2018Good
Wigan Youth Zone, Parsons Walk, Wigan, WN1 1RU
Effectiveness of leadership and management Good
Leaders are reflective. They effectively apply their learning from one school across the other schools run by the company. Leaders have an effective working relationship with both the local authority and with Wigan Youth Zone. Progress Schools Wigan accommodates extremely vulnerable pupils at the request of the local authority. These pupils have found it very difficult to succeed in other school settings.

Information about this proposed school
Expanse Learning Wigan School will be an independent co-educational special school. It proposes to register for boys and girls aged 11 to 16. The school proposes to open with a maximum number of 31 pupils. It intends to offer a small, personalised and nurturing environment for pupils who have SEN and/or disabilities, social, emotional mental health issues and ‘for those young people who have found a mainstream school environment overwhelming’. The school aims to ensure that pupils make progress by affording them the opportunity to learn and develop in a supportive and creative environment in which there is a focus on recognising achievement. The school is to be housed in the premises of a previous pupil referral unit that was originally built as a voluntary-aided Catholic primary school. The school intends to make use of the building and the school grounds to meet the learning needs of pupils

Information about this school
This was the first inspection of Expanse Learning Wigan School. It was first registered by the Department for Education in July 2018 and opened as a school in September 2018. The school is located in a refurbished building in Wigan that formerly housed a pupil referral unit. In addition to the pupils who are on the school’s roll, pupils who are dual- registered with their mainstream schools or pupil referral unit attend on short-term and/or part-time assessment placements. The school provides education for pupils aged 11 to 16 who are at risk of or have fallen out of education. Almost all the registered pupils have an education, health and care plan. A small number of pupils are placed at the school while a needs assessment is carried out. Pupils have a range of special educational needs, including autistic spectrum disorders and social, emotional and mental health difficulties.

Inspection of Shevington Community Primary School, Wigan, WN6 8EW
Your school is providing you with a good education and has some outstanding features. Children get an excellent start in the Nursery and Reception classes and have so many opportunities to learn with each other through play. You continue to make good progress in all other years and, by the time you leave at the end of Year 6, you reach above average standards in English and well above average in mathematics and science. This is because the teaching you receive is good and you also work very hard.

- Willow Grove Primary School13 Jan 2011Outstanding
Ashton-in-Makerfield, Wigan, Greater Manchester, WN4 8XF
Inspection of Willow Grove Primary School, Wigan, WN4 8XF
Our best schools never stop trying to get better. At Willow Grove, for example, the Everyone Playing in Class (EPIC) is breaking new ground in helping you sort out the difficulties you face. I could not find anything to add to make the school better that Mrs Pearson has not already thought of. We both thought teachers could involve you a little bit more when they are deciding what you need to learn next. Do continue to enjoy your time at Willow Grove. It is a very special place. Largely, this is because this is the place you overcome your difficulties and learn well. Wherever your next destination, I wish you continued success.
