available to them. Excellent examples of this are the use of college courses and very carefully planned work-related opportunities, such as those at a nearby farm and with a community media and dance group. Local schools work extremely well in partnership with the school. Recently, some students worked with seven other Surrey schools and brought together a presentation that was so effective that it secured funding for a joint school boating project. Students develop their ability to make informed choices about a range of topics and are given excellent guidance about their career options. The Investors in Careers award affirms the quality of this work. The annual ski trip abroad provides excellent opportunities for students to practise the independent living skills they learn in school and also shows the high levels of care provided for students.

Text from letter to pupils explaining the findings of the inspection
3 September 2007 Dear Pupils Inspection of Loseley Fields Primary School,Surrey,GU7 3TB Thank you so much for welcoming us to your school. We listened carefully to what you had to say. We believe, as you do, that you go to a good school. You told us how much you enjoy your education. We could see this in the drumming session in the hall, and many of you spoke excitedly about the school production. You said, and we agree, that you get a wide variety of things to do. The teaching you receive is good, and you told us that the teachers make learning fun. Your progress in lessons is good. You behave well, are polite and you listen carefully to others. This good attitude, together with the fact that you feel safe and well looked after by the adults, means that you are able to concentrate on your work. We particularly liked the way you carry out positions of responsibility, like being school councillors or as members of the eco-team. Well done!
- St John's CofE Aided Primary School7 May 2009Inadequate
Markfield Road, Caterham, Surrey, CR3 6RN
Description of the school
In this large primary school, the great majority of pupils are from a White British background. The number of classes in each year group rises from two to three in Year 3 because, in addition to those who start off in the Early Years Foundation Stage, a number of pupils join St John's from a local infant school. A below-average proportion of pupils have mostly moderate learning difficulties and/or disabilities. The school offers an extended day through breakfast and after-school clubs. It is part of a loose confederation with a group of other Surrey schools. There have been various temporary leadership arrangements since March 2008. The interim headteacher joined the school in February 2009 and has been appointed to take over as substantive headteacher from September 2009.

Thank you for making my colleagues and me so welcome when we visited your school. We enjoyed meeting you all and hearing what you had to say about your school. Although we found that your school does some things well, we also found that too many of you do not make enough progress in your lessons and so we have decided that your school requires ‘special measures’. This means that your school will get extra help so that staff will be able to improve teaching and to ensure that you all make good progress in English and mathematics. This is what we have asked your school leaders to do.

The behaviour and safety of pupils are good
occur are almost always name-calling. Once reported to school staff, incidents or disputes are quickly and appropriately resolved. Racial incidents are rare and students report that discrimination is not tolerated. Students feel very safe in school and this view is shared by parents. Students are made aware of the different forms of bullying and potentially unsafe situations such as social networking through assemblies and personal development lessons. A group of students in Year 10 have made a DVD for use in all Surrey schools to teach other students about the consequences of drug or alcohol use. The exclusion rate is dropping, as is the number of incidents of repeat offending. The large majority of reported incidents concern a very small minority of students. The school’s behaviour management policy which focuses on rewarding positive behaviours has had good impact on improving behaviour. Attendance has improved and is now in line with the national average.

Make sure that you all make better progress, particularly in English, by providing you with more guidance about how you can improve your work and by giving you help with your spelling, handwriting and punctuation. Improve the quality of teaching by giving you challenging targets to work towards and by monitoring your progress towards those targets when marking your work. Introduce systems to find out what your school does well and what it needs to do to improve further so that it can put into place clear actions for improvement. We have also asked the school to ensure that teachers’ work is monitored more regularly.
