- Christ Church Primary SW930 Jun 2006
Cancell Road, North Brixton, London, SW9 6HN · Part of SW9 Partnership
Description of the school
This smaller than average school serves an inner-city area. Around half of the pupils are eligible for free school meals. Four fifths of pupils come from minority ethnic groups, the largest being those from Black Caribbean backgrounds. Almost half of the pupils are learning English as an additional language. The proportion of pupils with learning difficulties is above average. Pupil mobility is high. The headteacher joined the school in September 2005, following an unsettled period in its leadership. There are plans to form a federation between this school and another Lambeth school led by the same headteacher. The school is due to be rebuilt on the same site in 2007-2008.

Most of you told us that you enjoy school and feel that you learn well. Most of you behave well, but we found that some of you need more help to manage your behaviour. We believe that, although your school does some things well, overall it is not helping all of you to learn well enough. So we have judged that your school needs special measures. This means that other inspectors will visit your school regularly to check that things are getting better.

You told us that behaviour is good in school. We thought so as well. We saw that you work really hard and try your best. In most lessons your excellent behaviour helps you make the very best progress that you can. In a few situations, we thought that a few of you did not always behave at this same high standard. We have asked the school to work on this so that behaviour by all pupils will be outstanding.

You should make faster progress all the way from Nursery through Key Stages 1 and 2. Too often, teaching is not good enough to improve your reading, writing and mathematics as quickly as it should. Your new headteacher has already started to make your school better. Your teachers are also working to make sure that all of you learn faster and reach higher standards. We want the school’s leaders to make better checks on how well you are learning.

Tulse Hill, London, SW2 2JE
Description of the school
Jubilee Primary is a large and complex primary school that serves a diverse multicultural community in an urban area. Most of the pupils are of minority ethnic origin and the vast majority come from families whose first language is not English. The number of pupils who take free school meals is well above average. Families move in and out of the area more frequently than is usual. An above average proportion of pupils have learning difficulties and/or disabilities, mostly with speech and language problems. In addition, there is a specialist centre that caters for pupils with hearing impairment. Three Lambeth schools were amalgamated and housed in a new building, to form Jubilee one year before the last inspection. Since that inspection, there have been changes of headteacher, chair of governors and most of the senior management team. In September 2006, the headteacher of St Jude's was appointed interim headteacher of Jubilee. In January 2008 a

You told us that you learn a lot in lessons and that teaching is good. We think teaching is outstanding and we could see that you especially enjoy the project work lessons where you have lots of practical activities that link your learning together. We were very impressed with the musical assembly, when some of you showed how much progress you have made in playing the violin. We enjoyed seeing some of your parents and carers joining in.
