Work has begun on a refurbishment of the home. The garden areas are tidier, overhanging shrubs in the back garden have been cut back. In addition the patio areas are in the process of being pressure washed giving the outdoor space a more open and brighter feel. Painting has started indoors, with staff sleeping in rooms, bathroom and shower rooms completed first. The upstairs carpets are cleaned and free of old stains. The bathroom and shower areas look fresher and cleaner. These developments mean young people benefit from living in an environment that is improving in quality.

The building is more homely and domestic as a result. The children helped staff to clear the garden and plant flowers to make this a more attractive outdoor place for everyone to use. There are plans for further redecoration, with children involved in choosing how their home should look. Staff plan to use the children’s artwork to decorate the home. School attendance has improved for most children since the last inspection. One child is now in full-time education and attending regularly. Another is attending regularly for longer periods of time. This optimises their chances of doing well in education and gives them the opportunity to make friends with their peers. This home was judged requires improvement at the full inspection. At this interim inspection, Ofsted judges that it has improved effectiveness . Since the last inspection, one child has moved on from the home. This was in a planned way to live with family and was a positive outcome for this child. Another child has moved into the home during this period. The children generally get on and staff report improved relationships among the children, with some shared activities going on. Planning menus and undertaking a main weekly shop with children has helped staff improve the supply of food in the home. All children feel safe living in the home, with one saying, ‘I’ve settled here.’ They do not find bullying to be an issue and say there are just the ‘usual teenage disagreements’. The registered manager has reported safeguarding incidents appropriately to children’s social workers, families and Ofsted to share information

In general, this home supports placements that have lasted, creating stability and the opportunity to undertake purposeful work with the young people to improve their futures. Two of the young people in placement have been here for over a year and one young person is coming up to two years.

Safeguarding is central to the practice within this home. Staff are aware of their responsibility to keep young people as safe as possible and are guided by policy and processes to support them in this task. Young people say they feel safe and know how to complain. Several young people have access to an advocate. A recent incident of bullying was dealt with quickly and appropriately.
