children and young people since the most recent full inspection
Children are making progress because of living in this home. They have been supported to engage with education. One child has been supported, through the use of a pictorial social story, to return to school. This is a significant improvement as they had previously not been able to attend regularly. Some of the older children attend a local sixth form college. This assists the children to make friends in the community outside of the home. It also helps to prepare them for independence and to develop life skills. Staff are developing a pathway plan for the children, which includes cooking and budgeting skills. This will support further preparation for independence.

The care of children
The home is spacious. The communal areas have been recently decorated, which gives the space a welcoming feel. However, some areas of the home are restricted by keypads or locks. This means that children do not have access to all rooms as they would in a family home. These restrictions have not been risk assessed and it is not clear why they are necessary or if they are proportionate to the risk levels.

children and young people since the most recent full inspection
Young people who live in this home have specific learning difficulties and require a high level of supervision. This supervision prevents them from being vulnerable in the community as staff are with them at all times. This minimises the risk of young people going missing from the home. Each young person has a missing from care plan that staff understand and will put in to place if a young person does go missing. The staff have a good link with the police and other agencies to report to in the event of such an incident. The young people’s participation in residents meetings is good. A weekly discussion with the young people takes place to hear their wishes and views on a number of issues. These include the type of activity that the young person would like to participate in. Young people go swimming, ice skating and for walks in the park because of the consultation. Staff ask young people about their views on the home

Children are making good progress because they live at this home. The manager routinely reviews the carefully prepared child-centred care plans, to ensure that they are current and meet the children’s needs. Some of the children have experienced a significant improvement in their relationships with the staff because the staff use these plans to guide their interactions. Children have been helped to verbalise their wishes and choices about their lives. This has reduced the need for specialist speech and language therapy input, as the staff facilitate and encourage communication skills.
