Information about this inspection
the care of children the safety of children the effectiveness of leaders and managers. The inspector looked closely at the experiences and progress of children, using the social care common inspection framework. This assurance inspection was carried out under the Care Standards Act 2000 to assess the effectiveness of the service, how it meets the core functions of the service as set out in legislation, and to consider how well it complies with The Children’s Homes (England) Regulations 2015 and the ‘Guide to the Children’s Homes Regulations, including the quality standards’. Assurance inspection report for children’s home: 2509802 2
p.1
Findings from the inspection
We did not identify any serious or widespread concerns in relation to the care or protection of children at this assurance inspection.
p.2
Findings from the inspection
The children who were living at the home at the time of the last inspection remain living there. Staff support children to maintain relationships that are important to them and to spend time with friends and family. Since the last inspection, the children have started attending a local college provision to complete courses in their chosen subjects.
p.2
Findings from the inspection
Safeguarding practice has improved. Risk assessments have been updated to reflect children’s current risks and are reviewed following incidents of concern. A clear fire safety plan is now in place. This provides staff with guidance about known risks and the action they should take to keep children safe.
p.2
Findings from the inspection
Fire doors are in working order and remain closed. Children have received fire safety education from the fire service, and additional smoke detectors have been installed in response to concerns about one child smoking in their bedroom. Regular bedroom checks enable staff to identify and remove prohibited items promptly.
p.2
Findings from the inspection
Staff generally respond appropriately to incidents involving children. On one occasion, staff supported a child when they returned home intoxicated. However, they did not seek medical advice in line with the child’s plan. Managers responded appropriately to this shortfall through oversight, reflection and challenge. Staff support children to understand risks associated with alcohol and substance misuse and are working with external agencies to help reduce these risks.
p.2
Findings from the inspection
Staff and the manager work effectively with other professionals. Referrals are made to specialist services when required and the manager advocates well for children. Regular team meetings provide opportunities for staff to reflect on incidents, discuss practice and share learning.
p.2
Findings from the inspection
Safeguarding incidents are infrequent. When significant incidents occur, the manager notifies the regulator in a timely manner. This demonstrates a clear understanding of regulatory responsibilities and supports appropriate external scrutiny of safeguarding practice.
p.2
Findings from the inspection
There has been some improvement to the home environment since the last inspection, including new carpets and kitchen flooring. However, several maintenance issues remain outstanding, including damaged tiling and general wear and tear in the main bathroom. Although some of the shortfalls identified at the last inspection in relation to the home environment have been addressed, further work is needed to ensure that the home environment is maintained to a consistently good standard.
