Summary of findings

The children have lived in the home since it reopened. The home is a warm and inviting place for children to live. The children have all made lots of progress since moving into the home. This is because they are building relationships with committed and supportive staff who support them in their everyday lives.

p.3

Summary of findings

Incidents involving the children have been serious but well managed by the staff and the manager to ensure that the children remain safe.

p.3

Summary of findings

An experienced manager is leading a newly established team that is stable, prioritises the children’s needs, and focuses on positive outcomes for the children.

p.3

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good

All 3 children are making good progress. This is supported by the stability and consistency of care they are experiencing at home. There are clear and appropriate boundaries for the children. Staff work hard to build positive relationships with the children to ensure they feel valued and safe in their home. Healthy daily routines are still being established however, the children have become more settled.

p.3

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good

Staff use ‘our chats’ and daily journals to capture the children’s voices and to have important discussions with them. These sessions are reflective and targeted to the children’s presenting risks, hobbies and interests. Children spend a lot of time in their bedrooms or out of the home with friends, rather than doing activities with staff, but staff make efforts to spend time with children in the home and engage them in discussions through key working sessions.

p.3

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good

Education plans are in place for 2 of the children to start with education providers in September. For one child this remains a difficulty, but the manager has plans in place to visit an alternative provision with the child. The manager has consistently advocated for the children’s education placements.

p.3

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good

Moves into the home are well considered. The manager ensures that there is an assessment of the children’s needs and considers the impact of children moving in on the children already living in the home. Equally, new referrals for children are reviewed to consider the children in the home. The manager says, ‘This is their home’. Children who have moved on from the home have had positive endings and been supported to move into their new homes.

p.3

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good

Children are supported to spend time with those people who are important to them. One child can spend a lot of time with their family and friends and staff complete regular welfare checks to ensure that family time remains safe. Staff support children to navigate their family and social relationships well. Inspection report for children’s home: SC424141 4 Professionals and family members shared positive feedback about the care the children receive in the home.

p.3

How well children and young people are helped and protected: good

Incidents are managed well with good management oversight and support. When incidents have involved police support it has been proportionate, with the view of keeping children safe, rather than criminalising them. Some reports require further clarity around de-escalation techniques used in line with children’s plans, prior to police presence being necessary.

p.4

How well children and young people are helped and protected: good

Staff have good awareness of issues relating to children’s vulnerabilities. There is good multi-agency support for children to access specialist services in respect of these. Key working sessions reflect good support for children in understanding the risks involved and to try and minimise them. Safety panel meetings are held to ensure that children have the right targeted support to create safety and ensure that plans are reviewed.

p.4

How well children and young people are helped and protected: good

There is a well-coordinated response to children who go missing-from-home. Plans are followed by staff and updated to reflect the children’s presenting risks. ‘Our chats’ are completed with children to ensure that they have time to reflect and discuss any worries following a missing-from-home incident. Consequences are rarely used, but when they are, they support the children’s safety and are natural consequences of their behaviour.

p.4

How well children and young people are helped and protected: good

Risk assessments are well written and regularly updated to ensure that children have individualised support from staff. The risk assessments support staff in understanding risks and triggers and how to respond in heightened situations.

p.4

The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good

The manager has effective oversight of the home and has developed positive relationships with the children and staff team. The manager can identify the strengths and areas of improvement for the home and has established plans in place to support the home’s future development.

p.4

The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good

The manager receives effective support from the responsible individual, who regularly visits the home and provides monthly supervision. This is important as the staff team continues to become more established. The manager is responsible for the day-to-day running of the home but as the team becomes more confident, responsibilities are delegated appropriately which is enabling staff to develop their skills.

p.4

The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good

The manager has high expectations for the care of children. Each child has an individualised risk management plans which align with their ‘my plans’. This demonstrates how well the manager and the staff team know the children.

p.4

The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good

The manager of the home ensures good communication and multi-agency working to achieve positive outcomes for the children. There is regular consultation with Inspection report for children’s home: SC424141 5 professionals to ensure plans are reviewed and kept up to date in line with the children’s needs, wishes and feelings.

p.4

The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good

Supervision sessions with staff are held monthly. Action plans are smart and reviewed in each supervision session. Spot supervisions are regular and used to upskill staff. Staff have access to a training calendar and feel supported to undertake their job roles. All staff still need to be enrolled on their level 3 or 4 qualifications, but these are not out of timescales.
