Information about this inspection

 the care of children  the safety of children  the effectiveness of leaders and managers. Inspectors have looked closely at the experiences and progress of children, using the social care common inspection framework. This assurance inspection was carried out under the Care Standards Act 2000 to assess the effectiveness of the service, how it meets the core functions of the service as set out in legislation, and to consider how well it complies with The Children's Homes (England) Regulations 2015 and the 'Guide to the Children's Homes Regulations, including the quality standards'. Assurance inspection report for children's home: 2621215 2

p.1

Findings from the inspection

We did not identify any serious or widespread concerns in relation to the care or protection of children at this assurance inspection.

p.2

The care of children

At the time of inspection, 2 children were living at the home. Since the last inspection, 2 children have moved into the home. One child has moved out as the staff could not meet their escalating needs. Children did not take part in the inspection.

p.2

The care of children

Staff have completed additional training around recording incidents, crisis prevention and room searches. When incidents have occurred, staff have used appropriate de- escalation techniques. The use of police to help manage incidents has significantly declined. Room searches have been more thorough, and the document developed provides helpful prompts for staff.

p.2

The care of children

Staff have a good understanding of children's missing-from-home protocols. Staff have followed these and acted without delay to safeguard children. Staff have shown professional curiosity when children have gone missing. Children are supported to return home after missing episodes.

p.2

The care of children

Staff have completed detailed key-work sessions with children. Children are supported to talk about missing-from-home episodes, alcohol use, sexual health and other concerns they have. Staff give good advice to children to support their wellbeing. Key-work sessions have supported one child to attend health appointments, which is positive progress for them.

p.2

The care of children

The manager has instructed a new independent visitor. This gives better opportunity for independent scrutiny. The manager has sent safeguarding notifications to Ofsted when incidents have occurred. This supports Ofsted's understanding of what is happening for the children and how this is being managed.

p.2

The care of children

Children's moves into the home are carefully planned. The manager works with the local authority to understand the child's needs and the impact of the children living together. Bespoke moving-in plans are created for children. This has allowed the staff to understand a child's personalisation preferences for their bedroom and helped them to create a more-welcoming environment. One professional said that there were 'good transition plans, and staff showed empathy and understanding for the child's anxieties'.

p.2

The care of children

One child moved out of the home immediately after a serious incident. There was no transition work completed with the child or follow-up contact to provide them with emotional closure. Assurance inspection report for children's home: 2621215 3 All requirements made at the last inspection have been met.

Recommendation

 The registered person should work with the placing authority to ensure that each child's transition is planned, and help each child to prepare for leaving both practically and emotionally. In the event that children must leave the home in an emergency, they should receive follow-up contact to provide them with emotional closure.
