Overall outcome The school is likely to meet the relevant independent school standards if the material changes relating to the school provision are implemented

p.1

report:

This inspection was commissioned by the Department for Education (DfE), which is the registration authority for independent schools. The school has applied to the DfE to make a material change to its registration. The school proposes to change the age range of pupils and change the maximum number of pupils attending.

p.1

report:

The purpose of the inspection is to advise the Secretary of State for Education about the school’s likely compliance with the independent school standards that are relevant to the material change that the school has applied to make.

p.1

Part 8. Quality of leadership in and management of schools

When we carry out material change inspections of independent schools, we report on the school’s likely compliance with part 8 of the independent school standards first. Under part 8, the proprietor is required to ensure that the school meets all of the independent school standards consistently. The standard in part 8 is intended to ensure that the quality of leadership and management at the school is sufficient for that purpose.

p.1

Part 8. Quality of leadership in and management of schools

There is a clearly defined leadership system at Abbeywood School. This ensures that leaders understand and enact their responsibilities effectively. Leaders are passionate, informed professionals. They use the effective, robust school systems well to ensure that any issues are known about and dealt with swiftly. There is a shared vision to place pupils’ wellbeing at the front of all that is done to help pupils to succeed. Abbeywood School, 12 May 2026 2 The proprietor has extensive experience of running schools in the education and care sector. While this school retains its individuality, the support offered by the proprietary board is valued. The shared systems that support the academic, social and wellbeing needs of the pupils are used well to provide effective quality assurance across all aspects of the independent school standards (the standards).

p.1

Part 8. Quality of leadership in and management of schools

The school has placed great thought into the material change request to increase the age range and capacity. They have well-established induction and transition plans in place to ensure that pupils accepted into the school can succeed. The proprietor has recently created a new classroom space within the building. This will be used for the younger children should the material change be implemented. This space is bright, airy and well suited for the leaders’ intentions.

The curriculum policy is appropriate. It reflects the ages, needs and starting points of the pupils that are included in the material change request.

p.2

Curriculum

At the time of the last inspection in November 2023, Ofsted judged the quality of education to be good. During this inspection, it was noted that, in a small number of subjects, the planned learning was not implemented as effectively as it could be and the school should review pedagogic and adaptive practice.

p.2

Curriculum

During this inspection, it could be seen that this has been addressed through the introduction of middle leaders. They have ensured that there is sufficient detail within the curriculum to support staff to tailor activities for pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND), or other barriers to learning. Leaders closely monitor the implementation of the curriculum.

The due diligence carried out prior to pupils joining the school enables leaders to quickly implement effective learning support.
