Summary of findings
Children said that they feel well cared for and have good relationships with all staff and the manager. Staff know children well. This means that staff support children positively when they experience distress. Staff work hard to ensure that children are safe from harm. This is further complemented by effective management and constant learning.
p.3
Summary of findings
Professionals said that the care that staff provide to children has supported children to make progress in all areas of their lives.
p.3
Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good
Children have positive experiences of moving into the home. Managers plan children's moves carefully, even when time is restricted due to external factors. Children move in at a pace that supports their needs and considers their vulnerabilities. This means that, despite lots of changes, the home continues to feel homely and remains settled.
p.3
Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good
Children said that they feel supported by staff. One child said that before coming into to care she thought it would be horrible, but it is 'really nice' living in the home. Children have secure and trusting relationships with staff. This means that they feel able to share their worries or concerns with all staff.
p.3
Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good
Children make positive progress with education from their individual starting points. Staff support children to attend education. This includes maintaining clear routines and boundaries, alongside building positive relationships with teachers. Children's attendance has increased and professionals said that this was because of the support from staff.
p.3
Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good
When children move from the home, staff recognise the importance of keeping in touch with children. Staff continue to celebrate children's milestones and achievements alongside offering support. These continued connections are testament to the positive relationships that staff forge with children.
p.3
Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good
Staff support and facilitate children seeing and spending time with their family and people who are important to them. This is further enhanced by positive relationships built between staff and children's families. Staff understand the importance of maintaining relationships, especially to support children to return to the care of their families.
p.3
How well children and young people are helped and protected: good
Staff have positive relationships with children. Children trust staff and feel safe in the home. This means that there are few negative incidents in the home. When incidents do happen, staff can respond appropriately to support children because they know and understand children well. Inspection report for children's home: 2550622 4 When children go missing, there are clear plans to support staff to understand children's individual vulnerabilities. This means that staff can respond quickly and appropriately to find children and minimise harm. Staff work with other agencies, such as the police and children's social workers, to ensure that information is shared and plans are updated.
p.3
How well children and young people are helped and protected: good
Children's records are well written. The manager reviews children's documents and ensures that positive practice is noted and learning opportunities are taken. This is fed back to the team individually and in team meetings. This helps staff to consider alternative ways to support children to reduce incidents and distress.
p.4
How well children and young people are helped and protected: good
Children are aware of how to make a complaint. The manager has created a culture where children feel comfortable to raise concerns if they have them. There has been one complaint from a child. This was taken seriously and responded to. This helps children to see that their opinion matters and their voice is heard.
p.4
The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good
The manager has effective systems in place to monitor the care provided to the children. He has a good understanding of the home's strengths and where work needs to be focused. He is accountable and aspirational for children to receive love and care from staff. This gives clear direction to the staff team and the progress of the children is tracked.
p.4
The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good
Staff talk highly of the manager and the support and commitment he gives to staff and children. Staff speak positively about the manager's 'hands-on' approach. Team meetings take place regularly. Children's care and progress are discussed in detail. Staff are confident to take part in discussions about children. Staff said that their views are valued and their contributions matter.
p.4
The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good
Professionals who work with the children describe the manager as 'dedicated' and 'supportive'. A parent and social worker both said that the progress that a child has made, because of the care provided by staff, means that there can now be a realistic plan for the child to return to the care of their parent.
p.4
The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good
The manager has created a positive culture where staff are encouraged and supported to progress under his leadership. This is complemented by regular supervision. However, there are missed opportunities for managers to support staff to reflect on their practice and adapt accordingly. Inspection report for children's home: 2550622 5
p.4
Recommendation
The registered person should ensure that all staff have access to regular, reflective supervision with the aim of improving practice and supporting the progress of children. The manager should have oversight of this. ('Guide to the Children's Homes Regulations, including the quality standards', page 61, paragraph 13.2)
