Information about this inspection
the care of children the safety of children the effectiveness of leaders and managers. The inspector has looked closely at the experiences and progress of children, using the social care common inspection framework. This assurance inspection was carried out under the Care Standards Act 2000 to assess the effectiveness of the service, how it meets the core functions of the service as set out in legislation, and to consider how well it complies with The Children’s Homes (England) Regulations 2015 and the ‘Guide to the Children’s Homes Regulations, including the quality standards’. p.1
Findings from the inspection
We did not identify any serious or widespread concerns in relation to the care or protection of children at this assurance inspection.
p.2
Findings from the inspection
Managers and leaders have met 2 of the 3 requirements set at the previous inspection. The remaining requirement will be reviewed at the next full inspection. Care practice has improved and this has had a positive impact on the child’s experiences and progress. Redecoration throughout the home has enhanced the home environment.
p.2
Findings from the inspection
The child enjoys trusting and meaningful relationships with staff. Staff spend quality time with the child doing activities such as ice skating, roller skating and going to the cinema. The child feels known, understood and cared for. This has helped the child to settle quickly and develop a sense of belonging. The child’s exploitation social worker said, ‘[Name of child] tells us they feel at home. [Name of child] said these carers feel like family rather than people just doing a job.’
p.2
Findings from the inspection
The child is supported to do well in education from their starting point. After a long time out of formal education, the child has been supported to return to school and is making good progress. Good attendance is actively promoted and incentivised. The child has successfully worked towards their chosen reward of a pet gecko. This provides the child with a sense of achievement and recognition.
p.2
Findings from the inspection
Staff keep the child safe. Risks to the child are well known and understood. The manager and staff regularly review risks, in collaboration with other professionals such as the child exploitation social worker. Staff have meaningful conversations with the child to help them learn how to keep themselves safe. Staff also implement firm and consistent boundaries, helping the child to feel safe and secure. As a result of the care provided, risks to the child have significantly reduced.
p.2
Findings from the inspection
Staff respond well when the child is missing from home. Staff go looking for the child and liaise with the relevant professionals, such as police and social workers. The child is supported when they return and staff work hard to understand the child’s perspective so they can put in the right support.
p.2
Findings from the inspection
The registered manager is a confident leader. He sets high expectations for staff. He proactively addresses areas of poor staff practice, helping to maintain standards of care. There is now a stable staff team in place, who work well together as a team.
p.2
Findings from the inspection
Staff are well trained. They receive training in relation to children’s individual needs, such as substance misuse, self-harm and child exploitation.
p.2
Findings from the inspection
The manager has effective oversight and quality assurance systems in place. He has a good understanding of daily practice and the care provided. Regular internal and external audits are undertaken, and any shortfalls are promptly addressed. The manager reviews all incidents, and learning is used to develop the service.
