The Eden School The Old Vicarage, High Street, Harmondsworth, West Drayton, Middlesex UB7 0AQ

p.1

inspection report:

Overall outcome The school meets the independent school standards relevant to the material change. The material change has already been implemented

p.1

inspection report:

This inspection was commissioned by the Department for Education (DfE), which is the registration authority for independent schools. The school has applied to the DfE to make a material change to its registration. The school has changed its premises and now operates at Park Place, Acton W3 8JY.

p.1

inspection report:

The purpose of the inspection is to advise the Secretary of State for Education about the school’s likely compliance with the independent school standards (the standards) that are relevant to the material change that the school has applied to make.

p.1

Part 8. Quality of leadership in and management of schools

When we carry out material change inspections of independent schools, we report on the school’s likely compliance with part 8 of the independent school standards first. Under part 8, the proprietor is required to ensure that the school meets all of the independent school standards consistently. The standard in part 8 is intended to ensure that the quality of leadership and management at the school is sufficient for that purpose.

p.1

Part 8. Quality of leadership in and management of schools

The proprietor, governors and leaders demonstrate a secure understanding of the requirements of the independent school standards and their responsibilities. They use their skills and expertise to ensure the school’s statutory requirements are fulfilled and to ensure there are effective arrangements in place to promote and secure pupils’ welfare and safety. The standards in this part are likely to be met if the Department for Education (DfE) decides to approve the implementation of the material change.

p.1

Safeguarding

The school demonstrates a vigilant culture of safeguarding. There is a suitable safeguarding policy in place that is published on the school’s website. Checks on the suitability of staff are carried out in accordance with the statutory guidance. Leaders, staff, the proprietor and governors receive relevant and up-to-date safeguarding training. This ensures they know the signs to look out for that a child may be at risk of harm and they understand the procedure to follow if needed. The school has reviewed its safeguarding procedures and carefully considered any risks that the new site and use of two adjacent buildings pose and has put measures in place to mitigate these. For example, entry and exit to the school buildings is closely managed by members of staff and there are clear procedures in place to supervise pupils when moving between the two buildings.

p.2

Health and safety and fire

The school has a health and safety policy in place that is fit for purpose. Checks on site safety and suitability have been completed for the hall space in use and the learning centre building. This includes fire safety training for staff and a fire risk assessment for both buildings. Some remedial work for the learning centre has been identified and leaders have plans in place to action this as soon as possible.

p.2

Risk assessment

The school has a risk assessment policy in place that is implemented effectively. The school’s ‘risk management register’ identifies general and specific risks to pupils’ welfare and the actions the school needs to take to reduce these risks. Appropriate checks on site safety and suitability have been completed for the hall space in use and the learning centre building that is being refurbished. The school has clear procedures in place to manage visitors and general access to both buildings and pupils are adequately supervised by staff.

p.2

Risk assessment

The standards in this part are likely to be met if the Department for Education (DfE) decides to approve the implementation of the material change.

p.2

Part 5. Premises of and accommodation at schools

The school’s site is maintained to a suitable standard. The school is currently using a large hall space while completing refurbishment work on the learning centre. The hall space provides a suitable space for pupils to learn and be together as a whole school community. The learning centre includes dedicated classroom and medical spaces in an adjacent building. The dedicated classrooms are sufficiently resourced with appropriately sized furniture, including desks and chairs for pupils’ use.

p.2

and showers

In the school’s hall space, there are suitable toilet facilities for boys and girls with running hot and cold water. Hot water is regulated to a safe temperature. Drinking water is available and clearly labelled.

p.3

and showers

The learning centre does not currently have toilet, shower or changing facilities for pupils, although these are planned to be built. To mitigate this, the school has placed suitable temporary toilet, changing and shower facilities just outside the learning centre building for pupil use.

p.3

Medical room

In the hall space, there is a dedicated space for the treatment of sick and injured pupils, which is adequate to meet the requirements of the standard.

p.3

Medical room

The learning centre also has a dedicated medical room space. Once refurbishment is complete for this room, it will become the sole medical room for the school.

p.3

Ensuring the health, safety and welfare of pupils

Leaders have suitable measures in place to ensure the safety and welfare of pupils, for example when using the temporary toilet, changing and shower facilities outside of the learning centre.

p.3

Lighting and acoustic conditions

There is appropriate lighting and acoustics in the hall space and the learning centre.

p.3

Outdoor space

There is a dedicated outdoor space for children in the early years, which is well resourced and suitable. Older pupils are able to access a large playing field for recreational use and physical education lessons.

p.3

Outdoor space

The standards in this part are likely to be met if the Department for Education (DfE) decides to approve the implementation of the material change.

p.3

The school’s accessibility plan

Leaders have a suitable accessibility policy in place. As a result, the school meets the requirements of schedule 10 of the Equality Act 2010.

p.4
