Information about this inspection
the care of children the safety of children the effectiveness of leaders and managers The inspector looked closely at the experiences and progress of children, using the social care common inspection framework. This assurance inspection was carried out under the Care Standards Act 2000 to assess the effectiveness of the service, how it meets the core functions of the service as set out in legislation, and to consider how well it complies with The Children’s Homes (England) Regulations 2015 and the ‘Guide to the Children’s Homes Regulations, including the quality standards’. p.1
Findings from the inspection
We did not identify any serious or widespread concerns in relation to the care or protection of children at this assurance inspection.
p.2
Findings from the inspection
Since the last inspection, 3 children remained living in the home and one child moved in.
p.2
Findings from the inspection
Children enjoy spending time with staff. They go out on activities together in the local or wider community and also play games in the home. Children ask staff to join in their games, and staff are always willing to do this.
p.2
Findings from the inspection
Children have established routines that staff have worked hard to implement. These provide the children with a sense of safety, as they know what to expect each day.
p.2
Findings from the inspection
Staff spend time with children and complete individualised focused sessions where a variety of issues are explored. The recording of these sessions is variable, and some do not reflect the therapeutic approach used in the home.
p.2
Findings from the inspection
Children have many opportunities to express their wishes and feelings. However, the actual voice of the child is rarely recorded. Staff do acknowledge when requests are made by the children but there is no fully embedded method to respond to the children. This could leave children feel unheard about issues that matter to them.
p.2
Findings from the inspection
When children’s behaviour is not as expected, they receive consequences. Leaders and managers have recognised that staff can respond differently to these. They have developed a specific protocol around consequences and possible outcomes for staff to follow.
p.2
Findings from the inspection
There have been incidents in the home since the last inspection that have required staff to physically intervene. Staff have not always considered the impact of where the hold has taken place. Not all physical intervention records provide adequate details, and staff are undertaking various forms of debrief with the children afterwards. Leaders and managers need to be clear about the discussion that should take place with the child, the purpose of them and who should do them.
p.2
Findings from the inspection
Case recording is inconsistent. In some records, the language used by staff does not reflect the therapeutic approach used in the home. Some details are missing from records, and these are not corrected when managers’ oversight is completed.
p.2
Findings from the inspection
There is an effective medication process in place that has meant there has only been one error since the last inspection. To ensure that staff remain competent at administering medication, they have all received additional training. This increased competence is contributing to minimal errors being made. Assurance inspection report for children’s home: 2613829 3 There have been 2 complaints since the last inspection. The company’s procedures were followed to ensure that they were dealt with appropriately.
p.2
Findings from the inspection
Staff continue to benefit from monthly group supervisions held by the home’s therapist. This is an opportunity for staff to explore what is happening in the children’s worlds and helping them make sense of it. These supervisions also support the continued upskilling of staff with the aim of continually developing staff knowledge and competence.
p.3
Findings from the inspection
The location risk assessment has been updated and contains the necessary elements to ensure that the location of the home remains a safe place for children to live and for staff to work.
p.3
Findings from the inspection
There has been one requirement met and 2 recommendations. Three requirements are not yet fully embedded and will be reviewed at the next inspection. Assurance inspection report for children’s home: 2613829 4
