p.1

Information about this inspection

 the care of children  the safety of children  the effectiveness of leaders and managers. Inspectors have looked closely at the experiences and progress of children, using the social care common inspection framework. This assurance inspection was carried out under the Care Standards Act 2000 to assess the effectiveness of the service, how it meets the core functions of the service as set out in legislation, and to consider how well it complies with The Children's Homes (England) Regulations 2015 and the 'Guide to the Children's Homes Regulations, including the quality standards'. Assurance inspection report for children's home: 2807817 2

p.1

Findings from the inspection

We did not identify any serious or widespread concerns in relation to the care or protection of children at this assurance inspection.

p.2

Findings from the inspection

Since the last inspection, the same child has continued to live at the home. Staff know the child well and have worked hard to build positive and trusting relationships with them. Staff understand the importance of the child's relationships with their family who they have spent time getting to know. This has helped them to work together to ensure that the child's time with their family is a positive and safe experience.

p.2

Findings from the inspection

Staff support the child's education and health needs being met. The child is attending an educational provision daily which is significant progress for them. Staff have conversations with the child about the importance of accessing health services which they regularly revisit to encourage attendance at health appointments.

p.2

Findings from the inspection

The quality of direct work with the child is variable. Staff are proactive in encouraging the child to think about their future and promoting the child's aspirations. However, on occasion staff do not effectively challenge or offer alternative viewpoints to allow the child to develop socially aware behaviour or better understand their relationships.

p.2

Findings from the inspection

Risks for the child have significantly reduced since they moved into the home. There are clear plans in place to support staff in safeguarding the child. The plans are regularly reviewed and there is a collaborative approach to assessing the child's risks through discussions at team meetings.

p.2

Findings from the inspection

There are clear plans in place for staff to respond to incidents of substance misuse. However, staff are not always proactive in challenging and addressing the child's misuse of substances at the home.

p.2

Findings from the inspection

Staff do not always take effective action in response to the child going missing from the home. On one occasion staff did not search for the child, and on another occasion, there was a delay in staff carrying out searches. There was also a delay in leaders and managers addressing this shortfall. However, there is now clear guidance in place for staff and those spoken to as part of this inspection know what to do when a child goes missing. More recently staff took effective action by searching for the child and returning them safely to the home when they were missing.

p.2

Findings from the inspection

There is an experienced registered manager who is supported by a deputy manager. There are clear systems and processes in place to ensure effective oversight of the child's day to day care. Leaders and managers update the workforce development plan regularly to support the continuous development of staff practice and quality of care provided to the child. Assurance inspection report for children's home: 2807817 3 Staff speak positively about working at the home and the support they receive from managers. Supervision and team meetings take place regularly. The therapist or behaviour management specialist often attend the team meetings to provide advice and guidance about how to meet the child's needs. This provides staff with opportunities to discuss and reflect on their practice and consider how they can better support the child. Staff are also provided with additional training relevant to the child's individual needs.

p.2

Findings from the inspection

Leaders and managers have implemented a workbook to support the induction of new members of staff. This enables managers to monitor and review the progress of new staff practice more effectively. Safer recruitment practices are followed for staff new to the home.
