Information about this inspection

 the care of children  the safety of children  the effectiveness of leaders and managers. The inspector has looked closely at the experiences and progress of children, using the social care common inspection framework. This assurance inspection was carried out under the Care Standards Act 2000 to assess the effectiveness of the service, how it meets the core functions of the service as set out in legislation, and to consider how well it complies with The Children’s Homes (England) Regulations 2015 and the ‘Guide to the Children’s Homes Regulations, including the quality standards’. Assurance inspection report for children’s home: 2820761 2 SENSITIVE-OFSTED USE ONLY

p.1

Findings from the inspection

We did not identify any serious or widespread concerns in relation to the care or protection of children at this assurance inspection.

p.2

Findings from the inspection

Staff and children have positive and trusting relationships. Children said that if they have any worries or concerns they can talk to staff who will listen and help.

p.2

Findings from the inspection

Children’s support plans are detailed documents which provide staff with information and strategies to provide consistent care for children based on their individual needs. These documents are child-focused, and the child’s voice can be heard throughout.

p.2

Findings from the inspection

Not all children are regularly attending school. Staff are supporting education in the home through tutors. The manager and staff are challenging education providers, virtual schools and placing authorities to advocate for children’s rights to a suitable education. Staff have helped one child to raise an official complaint to express their concerns to the relevant professionals about their lack of access to a suitable school.

p.2

Findings from the inspection

When the manager has made the difficult decision to end children’s placements, they have made informed decisions based on the best interests of the child and taking into account other children living at the home. Following this, the manager completed reflection on the placement and identified lessons learnt with the staff team.

p.2

Findings from the inspection

When children have raised concerns, they have been suitably explored. Staff have notified relevant professionals and children have been kept informed of the outcome of their complaint.

p.2

Findings from the inspection

When it has been necessary to use physical intervention, it has been reasonable, proportionate. The manager completes a detailed overview of all reports and evaluates the effectiveness of the measure used; they also identify any triggers or additional support needed for the child. Staff and children have a debrief after the event to reflect on the incident.

p.2

Findings from the inspection

When children have been missing from the home, staff have taken suitable action to search for them and to return them home at the earliest opportunity. Staff work with relevant professionals to support a safe return home for children.

p.2

Findings from the inspection

When there have been occasions where the children have caused harm to themselves, or expressed that they are feeling in low mood, staff have responded sensitively. They have provided first aid and emotional support. Staff seek support from external professionals when needed, such as the mental health crisis team and children and adolescent mental health services to ensure that there is a wrap around approach to supporting children’s wellbeing. Staff have implemented strategies to reduce risk, and the manager has been proactive in considering and planning for any future challenges. Following significant events, the manager completes reflection with staff and identifies any key learning from the incidents.
