p.1

Information about this inspection

 the care of children  the safety of children  the effectiveness of leaders and managers. Inspectors have looked closely at the experiences and progress of children, using the social care common inspection framework. This assurance inspection was carried out under the Care Standards Act 2000 to assess the effectiveness of the service, how it meets the core functions of the service as set out in legislation, and to consider how well it complies with The Children’s Homes (England) Regulations 2015 and the ‘Guide to the Children’s Homes Regulations, including the quality standards’. Assurance inspection report for children’s home: SC482418 2

p.1

Findings from the inspection

The assurance inspection took place to address specific concerns received by Ofsted.

p.2

Findings from the inspection

We did not identify any serious or widespread concerns in relation to the care or protection of children at this assurance inspection.

p.2

Findings from the inspection

Staff understand children’s development and communication needs well. Staff speak warmly of the children and are committed to maximising their experiences. Children have developed positive and trusting relationships with staff. However, some care plans do not contain the most up-to-date guidance about children’s daily routines. This prevents staff from having the right information to inform their care of children.

p.2

Findings from the inspection

Staff understand children’s individual vulnerabilities and how to respond when there are concerns. Risk assessments are well written, regularly reviewed, and give staff clear guidance. This helps staff to keep children safe from harm.

p.2

Findings from the inspection

Children are sometimes physically held to keep them safe. When this is judged to be necessary, records are clearly written and management oversight considers lessons learned. Children and staff are spoken to, giving them the opportunity to reflect and repair relationships when needed.

p.2

Findings from the inspection

When new staff start working at the home, they complete thorough induction and training. This includes shadowing more experienced staff prior to working with children independently. New staff are supported in the home by a consistent senior staff presence. This allows them to access appropriate guidance to help them care for children.

p.2

Findings from the inspection

When staff report any concerns to the manager, she responds quickly to understand and address issues raised. She appropriately escalates matters to senior leaders and offers feedback to staff. Any issues identified are dealt with in a timely manner. Staff said that they feel supported by managers and that communication is effective.

p.2

Findings from the inspection

Staff receive regular practice-related supervision sessions. These allow staff to reflect on their practice and the effect that this has on children. The manager provides appropriate challenge and support when this is required. This ensures that staff have opportunities to discuss areas for development and agree actions.

p.2

Findings from the inspection

The manager follows safer recruitment processes for new staff. This ensures that anyone coming to work at the home is appropriately vetted and assessed as suitable. Assurance inspection report for children’s home: SC482418 3
