the care of children the safety of children the effectiveness of leaders and managers. The inspectors have looked closely at the experiences and progress of children, using the social care common inspection framework. This assurance inspection was carried out under the Care Standards Act 2000 to assess the effectiveness of the service, how it meets the core functions of the service as set out in legislation, and to consider how well it complies with the Children’s Homes (England) Regulations 2015 and the ‘Guide to the Children’s Homes Regulations, including the quality standards’. p.1
Findings from the inspection
We identified no serious or widespread concerns in relation to the care or protection of children at this assurance inspection.
p.2
Findings from the inspection
One child has recently moved into the home in a planned way. The child’s needs were carefully considered alongside the staff’s skills and experience. The manager spoke to the professionals, involved the child’s parent and met with the child before moving in. Although the child has only been living here for a very short time, this has helped them feel settled.
p.2
Findings from the inspection
The home is a warm and welcoming environment. Staff are supporting the child to personalise their bedroom and plans are in place to redecorate it to reflect the child’s taste. However, door wedges are used to prop internal fire doors open, this is a fire hazard.
p.2
Findings from the inspection
The manager and staff understand the importance of education and have identified a school setting in the local area. In the meantime, the child is provided with structure and routines to their day, which include natural learning opportunities.
p.2
Findings from the inspection
Staff support the child to develop hobbies and interests. The child is interested in animals and was able to bring their pet hamster with them. Staff support the child to care for it. Staff researched local horse-riding stables and the child is enjoying visiting them.
p.2
Findings from the inspection
The manager and staff are developing a good understanding of the child’s needs and risks to the child are well understood. The child’s social worker said, ‘[The manager’s] been brilliant, very quickly understood [the child’s] risks and needs.’
p.2
Findings from the inspection
The manager has oversight of all incident records. The child and staff are offered opportunities to speak to someone after an incident. Gaps in staff practice are identified, and staff are supported to attend additional training to further develop their skills and knowledge specific to the child’s needs. However, the manager’s oversight is not always evaluative of the incident, the actions for staff to follow are not always clear and there is a missed opportunity to identify patterns of behaviour to help reduce risks.
p.2
Findings from the inspection
The child’s health needs are met. The child is supported to access specialist health services, such as CAMHS (child and adolescent mental health services). The social worker said ‘[The child] has struggled to attend the services previously, so it’s amazing they have attended their first appointment here.’
p.2
Findings from the inspection
The manager appropriately identifies concerns about staff practice. They effectively discuss concerns sensitively with staff and take appropriate action to review staff performance. The manager liaises with other professionals, including the local Assurance inspection report for the children's home: 2863824 3 authority designated officer to ensure that staff working in the home are safe to care for children.
p.2
Findings from the inspection
The child is cared for by a consistent staff team. The manager ensures that vacancies in the staff team are addressed. Gaps in the rota are covered by the current staff working in the home. When the manager has planned leave, arrangements are made to ensure that there is appropriate management oversight in place. Assurance inspection report for the children's home: 2863824 4
