they can be best supported to achieve what they want.

p.2

The leaders, managers and staff liaise with other professionals and the child’s personal network to look for the best ways to remove any barriers to the child’s engagement. They follow individualised multidisciplinary procedures for safeguarding children who go missing from care.

The leaders, managers and staff carefully consider all information provided by the local authorities at the point of referral and ensure that children who live together are compatible. When this information includes references to mental health, they seek additional information to make sure that they have a clear picture of the child’s support needs, and that the staff team have the right skills to support a child with those needs.

The safety and support plans clearly reflect the direct work which staff undertake with children. Children receive regular support sessions which help them to develop skills for life, such as being kind to themselves and building emotional resilience and healthy relationships. One child said: ‘She [staff member] has helped me to realise some things that I didn’t realise when it comes to family and relationship, that I didn’t know.’ One young person who is 18 said: ‘I got the support I needed. Staff support children to make health appointments when they are experiencing low mood. Staff support children with their health appointments, whenever the child wants this. This includes attending CAMHS (Child and Adolescent Mental Health) appointments. Staff appropriately support children to take prescribed medication, and this helps them to learn how to safely self-medicate. Some children who used to self-harm have not self-harmed since receiving consistent staff support.

p.2

This monitoring visit

Staff check on children when they are in their bedrooms and undertake regular welfare calls, when they are out in the community. One child said: ‘They [staff] always make sure that I am OK. They are pretty equal about that and ask everyone how we are.’ One social worker highlighted the non-judgmental attitudes of staff as one of the underlying factors of the quality of support that they provide.

p.2

This monitoring visit

The staff speak highly about the support that they receive from the management and other team members. Comprehensive training, supervision and additional support, such as counselling and complimentary therapies, are also available to staff to enable them to continue to work with children who have experienced trauma in their lives.
