p.2
Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good
When children move out of the home, they experience well-planned moves with opportunities to visit their new home before they move in. One child has moved into the home and was supported to personalise their bedroom and display photos of their family. This helped the child to settle and feel at home.
p.3
Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good
Staff know the children well and understand their lived experiences. One social worker commended staff’s persistence with one child and said, ‘[Child’s name] has positive relationships with staff.’ This demonstrates that staff help children to feel understood and have a sense of belonging.
p.3
Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good
Children make good educational progress when living at the home. Staff work closely with education professionals and encourage children’s attendance. For one child, there has been significant progress in their engagement and learning from their starting point.
p.3
Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good
Children’s health needs are met. When there are barriers to children accessing health appointments, staff arrange for the appropriate health professionals to visit children at the home. This reduces children’s anxieties and supports their engagement. As a result, one child now feels more able to access health support.
p.3
Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good
When there are risks associated with children seeing their family, the manager works closely with the local authority to explore options for this to take place safely. This ensures that children can still spend time with their loved ones.
p.3
Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good
Children participate in activities with staff. This includes going to theme parks, fairs and accessing local amenities. Additionally, children have opportunities to join extra-curricular activities, such as youth clubs and sports clubs. These experiences support children’s social development and physical health.
p.3
How well children and young people are helped and protected: good
The child currently living at the home reported that they like the home and feel safe. The staff support children to understand processes and procedures that are in place to safeguard them. As a result, children are aware of who they could speak to if they had any concerns.
p.3
How well children and young people are helped and protected: good
When children are missing from home, staff follow missing=from-home procedures. They search for children and work with police forces to support a safe return. A family member said, ‘[Staff] are active in looking for [Child’s name] when they are missing.’ Children are also provided with the opportunity to speak with an independent person when they return home. Inspection report for children’s home: 1155775 4 Staff understand children’s risks and speak confidently about managing these. They implement creative strategies to support children’s well-being and safety. For example, one child uses a safe word to alert staff when they need help or support in the community.
p.3
How well children and young people are helped and protected: good
Staff work well with a range of external agencies. Professionals report good partnership working. When specific concerns arise, staff make referrals to the appropriate services, ensuring that children have access to specialised support that meets their individualised needs.
p.4
How well children and young people are helped and protected: good
Staff speak confidently about their safeguarding responsibilities. When a concern was raised about a staff member, this was taken seriously. There is good partnership working with other professionals. However, there was a lack of robust challenge when one partner agency did not respond within the expected timescales.
p.4
The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good
The manager is suitably qualified and experienced. Staff say they feel supported by the management team and they enjoy their role. One member of staff said, ‘I feel 100% supported.’ This demonstrates an environment where staff feel able to talk openly about any worries or concerns they may have.
p.4
The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good
Team meetings take place regularly and are informative, supporting the smooth running of the home. The manager sometimes uses these meetings as an opportunity to refresh staff’s knowledge on safeguarding processes. This ensures that staff remain aware of their safeguarding role and responsibilities.
p.4
The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good
Staff supervisions take place regularly in line with the home’s statement of purpose. They are supportive in nature and provide staff with the opportunity to seek additional support to improve their practice.
p.4
The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good
Staff complete a range of training specific to children’s needs. The manager identifies that staff require additional support with record-keeping in order to ensure that records are clear and accurate. Training is allocated, but this has not yet been completed. Additionally, the home’s rota is not always an accurate reflection of who is on duty.
p.4
The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good
There are effective safer recruitment processes in place. This reduces the risk of children being cared for by unsuitable people. Inspection report for children’s home: 1155775 5
