the care of children the safety of children the effectiveness of leaders and managers. The inspector has looked closely at the experiences and progress of children, using the social care common inspection framework. This assurance inspection was carried out under the Care Standards Act 2000 to assess the effectiveness of the service, how it meets the core functions of the service as set out in legislation, and to consider how well it complies with The Children’s Homes (England) Regulations 2015 and the ‘Guide to the Children’s Homes Regulations, including the quality standards’. p.1
Findings from the inspection
We did not identify any serious or widespread concerns in relation to the care or protection of children at this assurance inspection.
p.2
Findings from the inspection
The inspection took place because of an increase in the number and severity of safeguarding notifications received by Ofsted.
p.2
Findings from the inspection
Staff are creative in helping children to express themselves appropriately. This has contributed to the child having a trusting relationship with staff. The child can confide in staff about their risks and concerns. The child is protected effectively by vigilant staff who work well together with partner agencies.
p.2
Findings from the inspection
The manager takes all allegations seriously and completes a thorough investigation. The manager uses regular individual and group supervision sessions to share learning from those investigations. Regular support from the clinical psychologist contributes to a learning culture and helps to improve staff practice.
p.2
Findings from the inspection
Staff follow the child’s behaviour support plan. Staff use a variety of distraction techniques and humour to defuse many situations. They recognise that holding the child is likely to escalate some situations, and therefore, holds are rarely used. On one occasion, staff called the police rather than using approved strategies. This increases the risk of the child being criminalised.
p.2
Findings from the inspection
Staff vacancies mean that the child is sometimes cared for by agency staff. Permanent staff know the child well, whereas agency staff are less familiar with the child’s behaviour and how to manage it. However, this does not significantly detract from the care provided to the child. Assurance inspection report for children’s home: 2796314 3
