p.1

Information about this children’s home

The home is part of a bespoke partnership service that focuses on providing local residential care for children with complex needs. The home can accommodate up to 3 children who may have social and emotional difficulties. Two children were living at the home at the time of the inspection and were spoken to by the inspector.

At these inspections, the inspector evaluated:

p.1

Information about this inspection

 the care of children  the safety of children  the effectiveness of leaders and managers. The inspector has looked closely at the experiences and progress of children, using the social care common inspection framework. This assurance inspection was carried out under the Care Standards Act 2000 to assess the effectiveness of the service, how it meets the core functions of the service as set out in legislation, and to consider how well it complies with The Children’s Homes (England) Regulations 2015 and the ‘Guide to the Children's Homes Regulations, including the quality standards’. Assurance inspection report for children's home: 2732313 2

p.1

Findings from the inspection

We did not identify any serious or widespread concerns in relation to the care or protection of children at this assurance inspection.

p.2

Findings from the inspection

Since the last inspection, the registered manager has left the organisation and a new manager has recently been appointed to the vacant post. No new children have moved into the home.

p.2

Findings from the inspection

Staff are supporting children to better understand their emotions and responses to others, resulting in a reduction in incidents. Restraint has been used proportionately and appropriately by staff on 3 occasions to prevent children harming themselves or others. Restraint records are detailed and include thorough management oversight. However, more could be done to support staff to reflect on actions that could prevent future incidents occurring.

p.2

Findings from the inspection

Staff do not ensure that children have healthy routines, including sleeping patterns. One child is spending long periods of time during the day in bed, and staff are not being consistent in their attempts to encourage the children to engage in education or meaningful activities. The education plans for the children are not meeting their needs and there is not enough challenge to the professional network to ensure that shortfalls in provision are addressed.

p.2

Findings from the inspection

Staff involve the children with shopping and cooking, and support healthy, informed decisions about diet and nutrition. One child is being supported by staff to develop their independence skills as part of planning for adulthood, which includes a carefully considered approach to managing their own medication.

p.2

Findings from the inspection

Staff understand the importance of family time and the children are able to have unsupervised time away from the home with their friends and loved ones. Staff take an age-appropriate and balanced approach to unsupervised time and demonstrate professional curiosity to explore any concerns. This encourages the children to be open and honest with staff, which helps to minimise risk.

p.2

Findings from the inspection

Staff are committed to their roles and speak positively about the support they have received from the deputy team manager. Over recent months, staff have been moved to work in other homes, which has caused instability for the staff and the children. Leaders and managers have since implemented a plan to ensure that this does not continue happening.

p.2

Findings from the inspection

Staff benefit from a range of training, including bespoke training in response to specific need. New staff receive a thorough induction, including training and shadow shifts, and must complete a six-month probation period. Supervisions and team meetings take place regularly and offer staff the opportunity to reflect on their own practice. Assurance inspection report for children's home: 2732313 3 There have been a number of medication errors, which have resulted in incorrect but not harmful administration of medication. Each incident has been investigated, and records show management oversight. However, learning has not prevented repeat incidents. Leaders and managers have since taken action to respond to these concerns, but this has yet to be fully embedded into practice.

p.2

Findings from the inspection

Allegations are responded to in a timely manner and thoroughly investigated. Leaders and managers have taken action to address poor staff practice, and this has resulted in some staff leaving and new staff being recruited.

p.3

Findings from the inspection

There have been improvements throughout the home environment. The décor and furniture in the home have been modernised and the children have been involved in the design. Assurance inspection report for children's home: 2732313 4
