Information about this inspection
the care of children the safety of children the effectiveness of leaders and managers. The inspector has looked closely at the experiences and progress of children, using the social care common inspection framework. This assurance inspection was carried out under The Care Standards Act 2000 to assess the effectiveness of the service, how it meets the core functions of the service as set out in legislation, and to consider how well it complies with The Children’s Homes (England) Regulations 2015 and the ‘Guide to the Children’s Homes Regulations, including the quality standards’. Assurance inspection report for children’s home: SC460063 2
p.1
Findings from the inspection
We did not identify any serious or widespread concerns in relation to the care or protection of children at this assurance inspection.
p.2
Findings from the inspection
Children are making progress. Staff are helping one child to apply for jobs, and they have also started driving lessons, which is increasing their independence. Staff help children to have structure to their day and access education and activities in the community.
p.2
Findings from the inspection
Children talk to staff and enjoy spending time in their company. Laughter is often heard in the home. One child who needs help and support with communication is using more words. Staff are consistently understanding the child’s needs more, which is leading to fewer frequent episodes of distress and upset.
p.2
Findings from the inspection
Children identify staff they trust and who would help them. School highlighted positive communication from staff at the home when one child left school without permission. The child contacted the registered manager for emotional support, and staff supported the child to return to school promptly. This highlights that children see staff in the home as a source of support and can reach out to them in times of need.
p.2
Findings from the inspection
The presentation of the home has improved significantly since the last inspection. The registered manager has prioritised the redecoration of some rooms and has ordered some new furniture. There is a new cleaning schedule in place, which staff understand and are actioning. The play space for one child is now clean and organised. There continue to be some areas of the home where damaged items need replacing and additional cleaning is required.
p.2
Findings from the inspection
Consistent agency staff are being used to support the core staff team to meet the needs of children through the night. One child commented that their sleep has improved as they are not woken as often now by a child who wakes regularly through the night. The use of agency staff means that core staff are well rested and able to meet the needs of children the following day. This is having a positive impact on the team dynamics and the care the children receive. However, the agency staff are not yet receiving supervision.
p.2
Findings from the inspection
The staff have not yet been trained in the specific needs of the children in the home. The registered manager has sourced training, which is scheduled to take place in the next two months.
p.2
Findings from the inspection
When children move into the home, the process is carefully planned and thoughtfully managed. They receive a comprehensive key-work session to help them understand the children’s guide and are given the opportunity to ask questions. The registered manager uses available information to create risk assessments; however, Assurance inspection report for children’s home: SC460063 3 the written records of these assessments do not fully capture the manager’s understanding of the children’s individual needs.
