p.2

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good

At the time of this inspection, one child was living in the home. The inspector spent time with the child in their home environment.

p.3

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good

The child living in the home has continued to make progress. The home’s collaborative approach with partner agencies, such as the child’s school and health services, informs care approaches to drive the child’s progress and achievements. As such, the child has gained skills to eat independently and to help undress themselves.

p.3

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good

Despite staff changes, those familiar to the child provide care for them often. This has helped the child to build trusting relationships with staff. These relationships support the child to feel safe to access activities and events in the community. There has been considered and careful planning to support the child to go swimming. They attend an activity club regularly, and they have enjoyed time at the beach and in the sea over the summer period. This is significant progress for the child.

p.3

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good

Staff understand the child’s needs extremely well. They recognise the child’s communication sounds and are able to respond to their needs. Managers work closely with the child’s school. This has increased ways for the child to communicate their needs in the home. For instance, the child pointed at a picture to communicate their need for a blanket, and staff responded.

p.3

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good

The manager communicates well with health professionals when there are changes to the child’s health needs, such as when the child’s sleep pattern is disrupted. The positive links forged with agencies ensure that the child’s health needs are reviewed without delay, and any recommendations are used to inform care planning.

p.3

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good

Over this period, one child moved into the home, and they moved out when their needs could no longer be met safely. Despite the child’s care arrangements ending, external feedback is positive about the care the child received while in the home. The child’s move on from the home was supported well, and the responsible individual has maintained contact with them.

p.3

How well children and young people are helped and protected: good

Strategies are used to help calm the child when they are distressed. Staff receive training and input from professionals to develop their understanding of the child’s specific needs and to guide their care. Additionally, the child’s personal care plan provides clear direction to staff to promote safe care when personal care tasks are required.

p.3

How well children and young people are helped and protected: good

Restraint is rarely used. Staff use strategies such as distraction, vocal reassurance and direction when the child is distressed. On one occasion, physical intervention was used to guide the child, who has moved on from the home, away from harming others. On Inspection report for children’s home: 2764887 4 OFSTED USE ONLY

another occasion, restraint was used for the child living in the home. This was a proportionate and appropriate response to prevent harm.

p.4

How well children and young people are helped and protected: good

The manager proactively reviews the child’s records to understand the care provided for them. There is considerable learning from care records and incidents to improve responses to the child. Any practice concerns are addressed promptly, and changes are made to the child’s care to prevent the reoccurrence of concerns.

p.4

How well children and young people are helped and protected: good

The manager has responded effectively to the requirement made at the previous inspection. They review body map records promptly to inform any additional actions required. This has also supported early identification of changes in the child’s health needs.

p.4

The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good

The registered manager leads the home efficiently and effectively. They have achieved the required qualification in leadership and management. Staff feedback indicates that they are a valued and respected manager.

p.4

The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good

Managers and the independent person actively monitor the quality of care in the home to improve the child’s experiences and care. Additionally, managers have carefully considered the learning from care arrangements that ended for the child who moved out of the home. This has led to clear plans being implemented to strengthen decision- making for children moving into the home, and to ensure that children who live together are well matched with one another.

p.4

The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good

Managers work positively with other agencies to inform care planning. The child’s plans identify their needs comprehensively and provide clear direction to staff. The child’s achievements, recorded as certificates, evidence the positive impact that living in the home has had for the child and their progress.

p.4

The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good

Staff supervision sessions are recorded effectively and focus on the child’s needs and individual practice. Additionally, staff team meetings are held regularly to support professional development and consistent care. These activities continually improve the child’s experiences and care.

p.4

The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good

The home environment has been improved. There are minor areas in the home that require new furnishings or repair. The managers are aware and are taking action to address these. The outside area has play equipment, including a trampoline and climbing frame, and there are activity toys in the home that the child enjoys. Additionally, staff decorated the dining room with presents and balloons for the child to celebrate their birthday.

The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good
