p.2

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good

Children speak positively about living in the home and identify trusted adults they can talk to. The relationships staff build with children are warm and respectful and help children feel valued and secure. These relationships often extend beyond children’s time at the home, with staff remaining in contact with some children after they have moved on from the home. This helps provide children with ongoing support and reflects the strength of relationships.

p.3

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good

Staff interact with children in a calm and nurturing way, using child-friendly language that supports their understanding. This enables children to engage meaningfully in key work sessions, where they are encouraged to reflect on their feelings, behaviours and experiences. As a result, children are making healthier and safer choices.

p.3

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good

Staff encourage children to take responsibility for their actions and encourage them to reflect on incidents in a safe, non-judgmental way. Debriefs following incidents are routine and effective in helping children explore safer and more constructive ways to manage their emotions. As a result, children are increasingly able to recognise the impact of their behaviour on others and will often apologise when appropriate. When staff challenge children’s behaviour, they do so in a measured and appropriate way. Children respond well to this and accept the boundaries.

p.3

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good

The manager ensures that changes for children are carefully planned and are individualised. This helps children to feel prepared and supported when there are big changes in their lives.

p.3

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good

Education is promoted and valued at the home. Staff provide encouragement and use incentives to support school attendance. This has had a positive effect and all children are doing well at school. Staff support children to take part in a range of activities, both in the home and in the wider community. This contributes positively to children’s self- esteem and social development.

p.3

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good

Although improvements have been made to the environment since the last inspection, some repairs within the home are still not addressed promptly.

p.3

How well children and young people are helped and protected: good

When concerns or allegations arise, managers act promptly and in line with safeguarding procedures. Immediate risks are assessed carefully, and appropriate referrals are made to external agencies, including the local authority designated officer, when required. This promotes a culture of safety and transparency.

p.3

How well children and young people are helped and protected: good

Physical intervention is used only when necessary and as a last resort. Such instances are rare and proportionate. When interventions do occur, they are followed by reflective Inspection report for children’s home: SC066183 4 debriefs with both children and staff. These are handled in a nurturing and non- judgemental way, helping children process the experience and consider alternative strategies for managing difficult emotions.

p.3

How well children and young people are helped and protected: good

There has been one incident of a child going missing from home. Staff responded promptly by searching for the child and notifying the relevant professionals. Following the incident, a nurturing debrief took place and the manager appropriately requested that an independent person speak with the child to ensure that their voice was heard. This demonstrates a strong safeguarding response to children when their whereabouts are unknown.

p.4

How well children and young people are helped and protected: good

There has been a challenging period in the home when children’s behaviour began to escalate and impact on one another’s well-being. During this time, the manager was slow to implement clear plans to manage the relationships between children, and staff responses were inconsistent as a result. Managers have reflected on this period and the support provided to children and have identified where improvements can be made moving forward.

p.4

The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good

The manager is committed to the children in her care and demonstrates a genuine passion for her role. She builds nurturing relationships with children and is a positive role model for them and staff. Staff speak positively about the work they do and the support they receive from leaders. They describe a culture where they feel valued, listened to and well-guided in their roles.”

p.4

The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good

The manager has effective monitoring systems to support her oversight of children’s care. She is supported by an experienced responsible individual who undertakes regular monitoring visits to the home. This provides another layer of oversight and support for children and staff. Because of these effective systems, leaders are able to address any issues promptly, improving the quality of care provided to children.

p.4

The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good

The manager communicates effectively and proactively with the wider professional network and this is a particular strength of the care provided. She ensures that relevant information is shared promptly and appropriately. This helps to ensure consistency of care and robust multi-agency working. One professional described the home as ‘amazing’.

p.4

The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good

Supervision sessions are held regularly and are reported by staff to be meaningful. Sessions are well-structured and reflective. They provide staff with valuable opportunities to explore and reflect on their practice, leading to a confident and well-informed team. Regular team meetings also help to support consistent communication across the staff team with the manager using this as an opportunity to relay her expectations around standards.

p.4

The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good

Safe recruitment practices are in place and adhered to, ensuring that only suitably vetted individuals are employed to work with children. Inspection report for children’s home: SC066183 5
