Inspection of Little Oaks Out of School Club Limited Copythorne C of E Controlled First School, Romsey Road, Copythorne, Southampton SO40 2PB

p.1

This provision does not meet requirements

Leaders have not ensured that staff who accompany children on outings, such as transporting children from off-site schools to the club, hold a current paediatric first-aid certificate. This compromises children's safety.

p.2

This provision does not meet requirements

Children appear settled and content at this welcoming setting. Staff gain useful information as to how children are feeling by asking them about their experiences. For instance, children eagerly answer questions about their day at school as they laugh, eat and chat to staff at teatime. This helps children develop positive relationships with adults who show interest in their opinions.

p.2

This provision does not meet requirements

Children enjoy participating in planned activities that sustain their interest. For example, when staff notice that children enjoy sensory play, they plan exciting tasks, such as creating 'gloop' by mixing cornflour and water or supporting children to sculpt with sand. Staff help to settle children who are new to the setting by taking time to get to know their likes and hobbies.

p.2

This provision does not meet requirements

Children love to play and explore outside. They enjoy balancing on wobbling platforms, negotiating climbing frames and using slides. Older children spend time in the fresh air talking to their friends while supported by adults who support their conversations. Caring staff help to create a positive environment in which children's friendships are nurtured.

need to do better?

n Leaders have not maintained oversight of staff training, in particular mandatory training, such as paediatric first aid. Consequently, leaders deploy staff who do not hold a current paediatric first-aid certificate to collect children from school. This compromises children's health and safety. n Staff understand the action to be taken if there are safeguarding concerns about a child. Leaders keep records of any accidents and injuries at the setting. Staff use this information to evaluate the ongoing risks of any potential hazards, both inside and outside, and make changes to the provision where necessary. However, shortfalls in the oversight of paediatric first-aid training for staff means that safeguarding overall is not effective. n Staff are skilled at supporting and encouraging positive behaviour. Staff respond quickly to any disagreements by offering children choices to help them think more positively. In addition, staff encourage children to consider the feelings of

their peers. This helps children to develop empathy and understanding for each other and better supports them to overcome any worries. n Staff work well together as a team to share relevant information about children.

p.2

need to do better?

19 September 2025 Leaders ensure they talk with staff regularly to discuss the ongoing needs of children and how to develop the provision further. In addition, leaders work collaboratively with specialist professionals to further improve the provision and the outcomes for children who attend. n Leaders provide accessible questionnaires, which encourage children to say what they think about the club. Leaders also gain insights from parents, to better understand the experiences of families who use the club. Leaders evaluate feedback from both children and parents to help them make positive changes to the provision. For example, they have ensured that the indoor space is consistently available for all children. n Staff help to grow children's communication skills and confidence. For example, staff encourage children's curiosity and creativity by helping them with a range of arts and crafts skills. In addition, staff use mealtimes as an opportunity to

engage children in relaxed and friendly conversation. As a result, children are immersed in a supportive, familial atmosphere, which helps them to feel valued while promoting their social communication. n Parent partnerships are strong. Staff communicate well with parents to create a consistency of care for children. Staff work with families to foster children's independence, for instance helping less-confident children access resources by gaining information from parents before they start. This helps children to settle quickly. Children say they enjoy attending the club as a result.
