p.1

The provision is good

The childminder has an embedded process to help children to settle quickly into the setting and form a firm sense of belonging. She gathers lots of information to ensure she meets their needs and wants. As such, children are very happy, secure and have strong bonds with the childminder and any assistants she works with. Children behave well and show a developing understanding of managing their own emotions and recognising the needs of others. This helps them to develop important social skills for their future learning.

p.2

The provision is good

The childminder supports and encourages children to gain higher levels of self-care and independence. For example, she patiently gives them time as they try to put on their jackets and shoes for outside play. Children expertly pull up their zips and delight in the praise they receive from the childminder. This helps children to build confidence in trying things for themselves and to persevere in tasks they may find difficult.

p.2

The provision is good

Children learn about their community and the wider world around them to build on their understanding of the similarities and differences in themselves and others. For instance, they go on regular walks to the woods to collect natural items to take back to the setting. The childminder reads stories that depict many cultures from different countries to build on children's awareness.

need to do better?

n The childminder takes the time to plan an exciting curriculum to help children to be inquisitive and curious learners. This enables all children to make good progress. The childminder carefully observes children's development and plans for the specific next steps in their learning. She is quick to identify any potential gaps, which may require additional support or professional advice. n The childminder respects children's own unique interests and enables them to make independent choices in their play. On occasions, the environment is not suitably organised, such as when there are too many items available and space becomes limited for children to fully explore in their play. At these times, not all children have the opportunity to focus on one activity or task, which affects their engagement and concentration. n Children develop good levels of communication and language. The childminder also recognises and encourages the different forms of communication for

children with special educational needs and/or disabilities. She constantly introduces lots of words, sounds and signs that helps to build on children's increasing abilities. For instance, they

She involves them in the progress and achievements their children make, including how they can support them at home. The childminder also regularly shares information with other professionals to provide children with a joined-up approach towards their progress. This helps to support children to continue to thrive and reach their full potential. n Children have many opportunities to be physically active, both indoors and outdoors. They enjoy negotiating the ramps and slides in the garden and this also builds on early mathematical awareness as they estimate space and distance. Children request action songs and display their increasing coordination as they balance and hop on one leg. The childminder helps children to make

healthy choices and understand the importance of washing hands and drinking water throughout the day to support their well-being. n The childminder is very reflective towards the overall quality of her setting. For example, she expertly plans for her professional development and any assistants she works with. Recent courses have strengthened their practice to use sign language to support the communication and language development of all children who attend the setting. Through regular supervisions and discussions, they are able to constantly refine and build on areas of the provision and care they provide.
