Context of the inspection

The residential provision of the college was judged to be outstanding at the full inspection in November 2024. This monitoring visit was carried out following a significant incident at the college.

p.1

Summary of the monitoring visit

Staff have a sound understanding of how to help students to stay safe and promote their welfare. Following a significant incident, leaders and staff thoughtfully reflected on what happened and took practical steps to further improve the robustness of staff’s response to student’s needs. Leaders continue to consider how they can enhance their processes for gathering important information about students’ individual support needs before they move to the college.

p.1

Summary of the monitoring visit

Leaders recognise the changing nature of individuals’ support needs and are offering ongoing support to both students and staff.

p.1

Summary of the monitoring visit

Staff work well together to identify any concerns quickly about students. This helps to promote a holistic and coordinated response to support them. Staff work alongside external agencies to provide clear advice, guidance, and support to students. Staff have built positive links with partner agencies, which are used well to help students to understand how they can stay safe.

p.1

Summary of the monitoring visit

The response to concerns about students’ safety is robust. Leaders and staff seek to work with students and their families to help students to settle into college life and understand what is expected of them. Early opportunities to help students to understand risk and the support systems that are available to them are used well. In addition, staff’s swift response to safety concerns and information sharing helps them to prevent any escalations in risk- taking behaviours.

p.1

Summary of the monitoring visit

Students are provided with a variety of avenues that they can use to seek support for themselves. Support is offered to students in ways that suit their preferred method of communication. Students’ induction to the college, educational workshops and well-being sessions are optimised to ensure that students are aware of the support that is available to them. Staff from the college’s internal support services have a comprehensive understanding of external support services, which allows them to refer students so that they can access more specialist support when required.

p.1

Summary of the monitoring visit

Students are provided with early opportunities to build positive relationships with staff and develop friendships and support networks with each other. Students say that they get on well with the staff and that they are always available for ‘a chat about anything.’ Students are offered the opportunity to participate in a range of activities to help them to make friends, experience new things and develop their interests.

p.2

Summary of the monitoring visit

Students say that they enjoy their life at the college and that they find the induction process helpful. Students know that staff regularly check on their welfare and they feel safe as a result.
