Inspection of Holy Innocents Play Zone Centre Holy Innocents C Of E Church, 192a Selhurst Road, London SE25 6XX

p.1

This provision meets requirements

Children are happy to see staff as they arrive in the playground at the end of the school day. They hug them and immediately begin sharing details of their day and what they have enjoyed at school. Staff listen enthusiastically, asking questions to show their interest. Staff support children to learn to keep themselves safe. On the seven-minute walk from the school to the hall where the setting is based, staff ensure that older children walk in pairs in front, while younger children hold hands with staff. Children demonstrate that they understand they need to stop at the roads. They make sure that everyone is ready, and the light is green before they can cross.

This provision meets requirements

As children arrive, their excitement is evident as they help to arrange the hall. They eagerly choose which activities or resources they wish to use. Staff take care to listen to children's preferences and ideas. They ensure that each selected activity is appropriate for children's ages and stages of development. Children's behaviour is good. They play well together and understand the need to take turns and share with others. Children seek others out to share experiences with. For example, they hand other children a racket to invite them to join them for a game of badminton.

Staff use this knowledge to plan a range of opportunities across the week for children that will help them to continue to develop new skills. n Staff are enthusiastic in their engagement with children. Staff play badminton alongside children, showing patience with younger children. For example, they demonstrate which end of the shuttlecock they should be hitting and provide lots of encouragement as they develop their hand-eye coordination skills. As staff and children play a tabletop game together stacking blocks, children giggle with anticipation of the tower falling as they add another block. n Children express how much they enjoy attending the setting. They highlight the variety of activities available each day and the opportunity for extended play with their friends. Group games, such as football matches, are particularly

Younger children show good balance as they ride bicycles and scooters around the garden, negotiating space and other equipment. n Staff promote healthy eating to children. Each evening, children enjoy a hot meal, such as meatballs and spaghetti or chicken with noodles. Staff always serve this with a vegetable accompaniment, followed by fresh fruit. They encourage children to try their meal, providing praise when they do and discover they like it. The setting also organises cookery classes for parents and carers and children so they can learn to cook the recipes at home together. n Partnership with parents and carers is effective. Parents speak passionately about the support the setting provides to the community, especially in terms of its holiday club provision. The setting has regular food parcels delivered, which
