Inspection of Laugh N Learn Day Nursery 518 Alum Rock Road, Birmingham, West Midlands B8 3HX

p.1

Overall effectiveness Requires improvement

The quality of education Good Behaviour and attitudes Good Personal development Requires improvement Leadership and management Requires improvement Overall effectiveness at previous inspection Requires improvement

p.1

The provision requires improvement

The nursery is not yet good. Leaders have made some improvements since the last inspection. However, there are still some breaches to the 'statutory framework for the early years foundation stage'. Staff do not fully understand how to implement safer eating practices for the youngest of children. Additionally, they do not always ensure children are supervised effectively while using large equipment, during outdoor play. These breaches increase the risk of children experiencing harm.

p.2

The provision requires improvement

Despite these weaknesses, staff understand and implement the nursery curriculum successfully. They understand that children who return to nursery after having a long period away over the summer require extra emotional support to help them to feel settled. They consider how children will be feeling as they begin to re- familiarise themselves with nursery routines. Staff help children to recognise their emotions. Through carefully planned play opportunities, children learn to understand what makes them feel happy and sad. Children who are unsettled receive cuddles and reassurance from staff. Staff help children to form friendships and understand what is expected of them. As a result, children are kind and respectful to adults and their peers.

p.2

need to do better?

n Mealtimes are social occasions for children. They sit together and learn to scoop food from a shared tray to their individual plates. Staff generally stay close to children when they eat, however, there are times when babies are not properly supervised while eating. For example, staff sometimes have their backs to children or move to other areas of the room to complete other tasks. This means that there are short periods when children are not supervised. This may delay staff responding to them if they were to choke. n Children enjoy their time playing outdoors. They sit with staff and use chalk to make marks on the ground. There are a range of opportunities for children to practise climbing, balancing and moving in different ways. Children are confident to engage in risky play. They enthusiastically climb on a large climbing frame and go down tall slides. However, staff do not always ensure there is someone

close to children who use this climbing equipment. This increases the risk that children could have an accident and injure themselves. n Staff develop good relationships with children. They get to know them well and are knowledgeable about what they are interested in. Where developmental delays are identified, leaders liaise with external agencies for further advice and support. However, children's key persons sometimes lack knowledge about children's individual needs so they can support them to make the best possible progress. n Children show confidence as they explore their environment. Younger children

need to do better?

5 September 2025 enjoy the range of sensory and exploratory toys available to them. They smile as staff help them to stack bricks on top of one another. Older children enjoy using their imagination to create a make-believe pond. They pretend to fill the pond up with water and practise jumping like frogs. There are some children, however, who require further challenge and are ready to transition across the nursery to their next stage of learning. Consequently, they are not freely exposed to learning opportunities most suited to their stage of development. n Staff help children to become confident communicators. They interact with them during their play and ask them questions to encourage conversation. Children are able to express their own ideas and feelings. They recall stories they have previously read and repeat language they have learned from books. This helps to prepare children for their next stage of learning.

p.2

need to do better?

n Children's behaviour is notable. Staff help children to take turns and consider the needs of their friends. They are calm in their approach and model behaviour expectations to children. This creates a happy and nurturing environment for children's learning. n Staff feel supported in their roles. They meet regularly with leaders and engage in regular training. Leaders spend time in rooms with staff and observe their practice so that they can focus the support they offer them most effectively. n Parents comment positively about the nursery. Leaders are committed to involving parents in their children's experiences at nursery. They offer workshops for parents, where they can spend time with their children engaging in play activities. Leaders adapt communication methods to suit the needs of families so that they all receive information about their children's time in nursery.
