p.1

The provision is good

Children arrive happy and confident. They explore the childminder's home safely. Children enjoy spending time with the childminder and their friends. They play alongside one another and conversations flow back-and-forth. The childminder role models language skilfully to support the development of children's communication skills.

p.2

The provision is good

The childminder plans a well–sequenced, ambitious curriculum that develops all children's learning, including children who are disadvantaged. For example, to develop children's understanding of where food comes from the childminder supports children to create a vegetable patch in the garden. Children buy seeds and plant them. They are excited to see that the vegetables have grown and are eager to pick the fresh produce, such as, tomatoes and runner beans. Children develop their vocabulary as they describe the changes they observe.

p.2

The provision is good

Children feel valued as the childminder celebrates their individuality and achievements. Children smile proudly as together they look through the photographs in their learning journals. Children recall past events, saying 'when I was little you picked me up, now I am big'. Children are developing their self- esteem and a strong sense of self.

need to do better?

n The childminder has a secure understanding of how young children learn. She gathers meaningful information from parents and carers and uses ongoing observations to accurately assess children's development. This enables her to identify what children need to learn next and where they may need additional support. The childminder plans targeted activities to help children to achieve and make good progress in their learning. n The childminder is passionate about children developing their communication and language skills. She provides a range of experiences such as sharing core texts, visits to the library and reciting familiar nursery rhymes. Children talk to the childminder about their favourite books. This supports children to learn new vocabulary and develop a love for reading. n The childminder is quick to intervene and support children during conflict. She uses simple reminders about rules, and distraction techniques, to help children

to move on. However, she does not consistently build on these moments to help children understand their own emotions or support them to recognise how their actions affect others. n The childminder teaches children early mathematical concepts in a variety of ways. For example, the childminder roles models mathematical language when her and the children refill an outdoor portable sink. Children use key vocabulary

21 August 2025 such as 'heavy' and 'light', 'full' and 'empty' correctly. The childminder encourages children to use key word such as 'bigger' and 'taller' when sharing their observations of the vegetable patch. n Children develop increasing independence and self-care skills. The childminder encourages them to practise dressing and undressing as they prepare for toilet training. At mealtimes, children help to prepare their own dessert, learning to cut fruit such as bananas and strawberries safely. Consequently, even the youngest children gain confidence and pride in managing tasks for themselves. n The childminder identifies any gaps in children's learning and development swiftly and works with parents to seek support for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities. For example, she will meet with parents and help them to make referrals, working together with healthcare providers and speech and language professionals. However, the childminder is not fully aware

of the role of other local authority teams and how they can support her in her work, prior to children receiving specialist support. n Strong partnership with parents is a strength of the setting. Parents speak highly of the childminder and value the effective communication and regular feedback they receive. They praise the activities provided and highlight the positive impact they have on their children's confidence, social skills and language development.
