Overall effectiveness Inadequate

The quality of education Inadequate Behaviour and attitudes Inadequate Personal development Inadequate Leadership and management Inadequate Overall effectiveness at previous inspection Not applicable

p.1

The provision is inadequate

Children and staff in the nursery are not adequately safeguarded because the provider does not keep all required records, and other records are not accessible and available to view. Nevertheless, children demonstrate secure relationships with the provider and each other. They have space to move around the setting and make some choices about their learning from the available resources, such as choosing books to share.

p.2

The provision is inadequate

The provider does not demonstrate a secure understanding of how the youngest children learn and the support they need during their play. Children often wander from one resource to the next with little interest or focus for their play. However, when the provider does engage children in play, she gives them encouragement to try new challenges and praises them enthusiastically for their efforts. For example, toddlers develop their hand-eye coordination and control over their movements when they stack cups and wooden rings. The provider uses baby sign language alongside verbal cues to help children to understand simple words and instructions.

p.2

The provision is inadequate

Children learn to wait and take turns during activities, which supports the development of their social skills. The provider gives them clear and age- appropriate guidance so they begin to understand and manage their own behaviour. Children have opportunities to build links within the community, such as during visits to the local library and children's centre. They play outside in the fresh air each day and build on their physical skills during trips to the park.

p.2

need to do better?

n The provider does not maintain an accurate record of children's actual hours of attendance. She does not ensure that records relating to staff's qualifications and suitability checks are available to view. Despite this, the provider has a secure knowledge of the signs that indicate a child may be at risk from harm or abuse. She knows the procedures to follow if she has concerns about a child or an adult. n The provider assesses children's progress in partnership with parents and carers, and identifies next steps in children's learning. She also finds out about children's interests. However, the provider does not demonstrate a secure understanding of how the youngest children learn. This means she does not design a well-planned curriculum that provides children with purposeful play and learning experiences. For example, the provider directs toddlers to play with the toy kitchen and with baby dolls. However, she does not engage with them in

these activities to guide and support their play. As a result, children quickly become disengaged and move away. n Children enjoy listening to the provider sing, using a hand puppet as a prop. The

need to do better?

30 June 2025 provider demonstrates the initial sounds of the words, repeats familiar words and introduces new ones, such as 'duck' and 'quack'. She demonstrates rhythm and intonation, which helps children to understand how sounds and words fit together. The repetitive songs help children to memorise words and phrases, such as 'Heads, shoulder, knees and toes'. n Children develop their physical skills and spatial awareness. For example, they use their feet to push themselves along using ride-on toys. Children learn to climb steps and slide safely. During this play, the provider models early mathematical concepts, such as counting one, two, three. The youngest children learn to drink from a cup and to feed themselves using age-appropriate cutlery. The provider supports children to wash their hands before eating, which helps their developing understanding of good hygiene routines. Children enjoy a wide range of healthy snacks and meals.

p.2

need to do better?

n The provider works in partnership with parents to provide consistent care routines for children. This helps children to feel safe and secure. Children develop their social skills and build relationships with other children during visits to the library and playgroup. This helps to prepare them for the larger social environment in nursery school. n The provider has some plans in place to improve the setting, such as renovating the outdoor area so that it is suitable for children to play. She has recruited a new staff team and has plans in place for its supervision and training. However, the provider's plans for improvement do not focus enough on developing her own knowledge and understanding in order to raise the quality of education for the youngest children.
