Inspection of Happy Kids Day Nursery 38 Petts Hill, Northolt, Middlesex UB5 4NL

Overall effectiveness Inadequate

p.1
The provision is inadequate
The provider does not ensure that children's safety is assured at all times. Staff, including those responsible for safeguarding, do not have an effective understanding of their duties with regard to child protection processes. In particular, they are not alert to potentially inappropriate actions by other staff and do not escalate these where required.
p.2
The provision is inadequate
Staff provide a wide range of activities for the children, which children often enjoy participating in. For example, children play happily with the water and the sand or show interest as they use magnifying glasses to search for minibeasts. However, staff do not plan carefully considered play and learning opportunities to help children make progress on their individual learning journeys.
p.2
The provision is inadequate
Staff do not consistently demonstrate an understanding of how young children learn and develop. For example, they expect babies to sit in a circle and sing for extended periods of time. Babies become restless and lose interest at these times. This does not support children's progress in their learning and development.
p.2
The provision is inadequate
Staff do not consistently support children to understand expected behaviours. For example, if children snatch from each other, staff do not intervene and clearly model how to take turns. This does not help children to develop the skills needed to form positive relationships with their peers.
p.2
need to do better?
n Staff, including those with responsibility for safeguarding, do not have a sufficient knowledge and understanding of child protection processes and procedures. For example, they do not understand the required processes to follow if allegations against a member of staff are made. This poor knowledge of child protection processes puts children at risk of harm. n The provider does not ensure that staff are consistent in supporting children to understand expected behaviours. There are too many occasions when adults physically move or handle children unnecessarily rather than supporting children with their behaviour in appropriate ways. n The provider does not have an effective understanding of what good practice looks like. They are unable to identify strengths and areas for development in staff practice. Therefore, they do not provide targeted training and supervision opportunities to support staff to develop in weaker areas of their practice.
p.2
need to do better?
n The provider does not ensure that the key-person system is effective. Some staff do not know children well enough. For example, on occasion, they do not know children's exact age or name. They are often unable to explain the language that children speak at home. This does not support children's emotional well-being. Staff do not consistently understand the progress that their key children have made and appropriate next steps for them. Too often, key persons describe young children's next steps as learning colours or sitting for longer periods of time at circle time. This does not reflect children's age and stage of development. This means that key persons do not plan appropriate learning opportunities for children, and this impacts on progress children make. n The provider does not deploy staff appropriately at all times in order to supervise children effectively. In addition, some staff do not have a good enough

understanding of how to supervise children well. This means that, at times, staff do not see if children hurt each other during their play. On these occasions, staff do not check if children are injured or intervene to support children to develop their understanding of how to play positively with their peers. This poor supervision impacts on children's well-being, learning and development. n The provider has not implemented an effective programme of learning for communication and language. The quality of the interactions by staff is variable. Where practice is stronger, staff get down to children's level and support their language by narrating as they play or singing songs with the children. However, too often, staff do not support children's interactions well enough. For example, they ask too many questions that only require one-word answers or stand above children as they speak to them. Staff leave some children to play for long
