p.2

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good

At the time of the inspection, three children were living at the home. Two have been living at the home for over a year, and one has moved in more recently. Managers carefully consider the needs of all children prior to them moving in, and children already living in the home are involved in welcoming new arrivals. This inclusive approach supports the development of positive peer relationships.

p.3

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good

Staff are committed to providing stability for children and enabling them to develop a sense of permanence and belonging. They know the children well, listen to them, invest time in them and promote their welfare. As a result, children form trusted and secure relationships with staff. One child commented, ‘Staff have helped me a lot. I’ve had my ups and downs, but they have really helped.’

p.3

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good

Children’s identity is understood and respected by the staff team. Staff sensitively manage discussions with children to explore their identity to help grow this understanding and ensure that they can meet their needs in this area.

p.3

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good

Children attend education regularly. Staff maintain effective communication with children’s education providers to ensure that learning is tailored to their individual needs. Where communication challenges arise, managers implement plans to address them. This effective multi-agency working helps children to make educational progress from their starting points.

p.3

Staff encourage children to succeed through personalised incentives. Children are actively involved in choosing their rewards and helped to understand expectations through natural consequences. This approach nurtures children’s self-esteem, responsibility and independence.

p.3

How well children and young people are helped and protected: good

Staff have a clear understanding of each child’s risks and vulnerabilities. Risk assessments are regularly reviewed and updated. Staff talk to children about safeguarding concerns and risky behaviours, helping them to understand how to keep themselves safe.

p.3

How well children and young people are helped and protected: good

Physical intervention is used only when necessary and as a last resort to keep children safe’. Staff are appropriately trained, and all incidents are evaluated by the manager to ensure proportionality. Reflective discussions are held with both staff and children following any intervention. This helps managers and staff to identify any learning as to how any future incidents may be managed more effectively.

p.3

How well children and young people are helped and protected: good

Clear protocols are in place for when children go missing from home. Staff actively search for children and liaise as necessary with police, parents and professionals. Inspection report for children’s home: SC478134 4 Children are welcomed back and supported to reflect on their experiences when they return home. Any concerns relating to incidents are escalated appropriately.

p.3

How well children and young people are helped and protected: good

Staff respond sensitively to incidents of self-harm. They provide children with emotional warmth and increased support during times of distress. Staff also seek input from relevant professionals to better understand and manage these behaviours.

p.4

How well children and young people are helped and protected: good

On occasion, room searches are conducted when safety concerns arise. Children are informed, and any items posing a risk are removed. Searches are recorded appropriately and risk assessments are updated as needed.

p.4

How well children and young people are helped and protected: good

Safe recruitment practices are in place. This helps to provide the manager confidence that staff are suitable to work with children.

p.4

The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good

Since the last inspection, there has been a number of changes in the leadership and management of the home. At the time of the inspection, the registered manager had recently moved to another home within the organisation. A new manager has now been appointed and a thorough handover process supported both children and staff through this transition.

p.4

The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good

Staff enjoy working at the home and work well together as a team. They say that they feel valued and supported by the management team. Staff describe the new manager as supportive and knowledgeable. The children benefit from a staff team that is stable and consistent.

p.4

The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good

Staff receive regular opportunities to reflect on their practice, which helps them respond to children’s evolving needs. Managers ensure that mandatory training is completed by staff promptly and provide additional learning through sessions led by the home’s clinical lead. This supports staff in improving their knowledge and skills, helping them to provide good-quality care to children.

p.4

The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good

The manager works closely with the clinical lead, who attends team meetings to offer guidance and support. This helps staff to consider children’s needs and behaviours from a different perspective and enhances the quality of care provided.

p.4

The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good

Leaders and managers have a clear understanding of the home’s strengths and areas for development. Effective monitoring systems are in place to review children’s care and identify any shortfalls. When shortfalls are identified, actions are taken to address them.

p.4

The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good

The manager engages proactively with external agencies, which has helped them to develop positive relationships. One social care professional stated, ‘I could not ask for a better place for [child’s name] to be. It meets all their needs.’
