p.1

The provision is good

Children are supported well to make good progress overall throughout their time with this kind and thoughtful childminder. The childminder helps them build close relationships with herself, her family and with each other. This provides a firm basis for the development of their confidence and self-awareness to support their future learning, including their readiness for school. Children learn to be polite and aware of others as, for instance, they wash baby dolls together in the outdoor role-play kitchen and take turns throwing different-coloured balls into containers in the garden.

p.2

The provision is good

Children are safe and secure in the childminder's vigilant care. They respond well to the childminder's high expectations for good behaviour and follow instructions carefully. Two-year-olds, for example, learn to help each other to put on sun hats in the hot weather and know they need sun cream on so they can play safely and not get burned. Children increasingly assess their own risk as they take part in the wide range of rocking, riding and climbing activities in the childminder's garden or on their visits to country parks, woodlands and playgroups. Parents appreciate the good communication with the childminder and the guidance to help their children learn at home.

need to do better?

n The childminder has strongly developed her curriculum to provide memorable experiences that strategically help build children's learning overall. However, occasionally, the childminder does not help children to achieve their full potential in their learning. For example, when she introduces them to too many activities at once and distracts them from tasks they are keenly focused on. n The childminder strongly promotes children's listening, speaking and early literacy skills. She introduces children to well-chosen songs and nursery rhymes that develop their familiarity with the sounds, patterns and rhythm of language. She encourages children to talk to each other as they play and leads by example. She helps very young children to shape the words they are saying by repeating back to them the sounds and new words they make. n The childminder encourages children's love of, and engagement with, books. She

carefully chooses books that broaden children's understanding of the world and cultural experiences. She makes good use of repeated words and phrases to make stories memorable. She reads stories well and, for example, helps children to follow the plot carefully and broaden their vocabulary. n The childminder is a warm and positive role model. She encourages children to behave well and use 'please' and 'thank you' as they select their toys or tidy away together. She makes good use of books and stories to support many areas of children's development, such as an understanding of kindness and fairness.

She is well qualified and makes good use of training and opportunities to discuss her practice with other early years professionals, such as local authority advisers, to reflect on her practice. She reflects on and adjusts her curriculum to better suit children's needs. n The childminder strongly promotes children's health and well-being.
