Inspection report for children’s home - monitoring visit: SC066466 1 SC066466 Registered provider: The Cuckfield Care Consultancy Limited
p.1
Inspected under the social care common inspection framework
p.1
Information about this children’s home
This home is run by a private provider and is registered to care for up to six children. The home provides medium- to long-term placements for vulnerable children with emotional, social and psychological difficulties. At the time of the inspection, five children were living in the home.
p.1
Information about this children’s home
This registered manager has been in post since November 2024.
p.1
This monitoring visit
A full inspection was carried out at this home on 3 and 4 June 2025. Serious and widespread concerns were identified at this inspection and the home was judged to be inadequate. Following the inspection, the provider was issued a restriction notice. This means that no new children can move into the home while the notice is in place.
p.1
This monitoring visit
Following the full inspection, there has been a significant increase in safeguarding notifications. This indicated further deterioration in the quality of care and safety of children. As a result, an urgent monitoring visit was carried out prior to the draft report of the full inspection being shared with the provider. The purpose of the monitoring visit was to consider the immediate safety of children.
p.1
This monitoring visit
Children are not safe living in this home.
p.1
This monitoring visit
There are significant shortfalls in the ability of leaders, managers and staff to keep children safe from harm. The extent of children going missing from the home, harming themselves and misusing substances and alcohol have significantly increased. The safety plans that are in place to mitigate these high risks are ineffective, poorly informed and not robustly followed by staff. This is further Inspection report for children’s home - monitoring visit: SC066466 2 hindered by not having sufficient staff to follow the safety plans that are in place. Furthermore, leaders and managers are not effectively supporting staff to reduce risks to children. Consequently, this further comprises children’s safety and undermines their progress.
p.1
This monitoring visit
Some children continue to access and engage in misusing various drugs on a regular basis. This has resulted in serious harm and ill-health that required children to be hospitalised. Staff have been able to encourage one child to agree to engage with drug cessation services. However, staff have not been able to help other children overcome barriers that are preventing them from engaging with appropriate services.
p.2
This monitoring visit
When children experience difficult emotions that lead to significant self-harm and suicide ideation, staff respond with care and ensure that children get the medical treatment needed. They also ensure that information is shared with mental health professionals. However, staff are not supported to regularly look for positive strategies to support children’s mental health needs and lower the risk of such incidents occurring. Staff also do not always follow agreed safety plans or missing from home protocols for children, resulting in a potentially avoidable incident for one child.
p.2
This monitoring visit
Morale within the staff team is extremely low. While they aspire for children to have positive experiences, staff are fearful for the welfare of children and the potential for further serious harm.
p.2
This monitoring visit
Managers are committed to the children that they care for. They are eager to learn and improve. However, a lack of adequate oversight has meant that they have not been able to identify practice concerns fully and respond to these effectively. As a result, practice in the home has continued to deteriorate and children are exposed to persistent risk of harm. Inspection report for children’s home - monitoring visit: SC066466 3
