p.2
improvement to be good
The inspector briefly spoke to the child as part of this inspection.
p.3
improvement to be good
Since the last inspection, one child has remained living in the home. The child has made progress given their starting point. However, staff have not been proactive in meeting all the child’s needs, which has hindered further progress for the child.
p.3
improvement to be good
Staff have positive relationships with the child. They engage in meaningful conversations with the child, allowing them to explore their emotions and behaviours.
p.3
improvement to be good
Staff understand the importance of the child’s relationships with their family. Staff ensure that the child is supported to see their family in line with their care plans. The child’s family members are invited to visit the child in the home.
p.3
improvement to be good
The child does not access any educational provision. The provider offers the child indirect learning through a mentor. They help the child develop life skills. Staff work with the child’s social worker to encourage the child’s return to education.
p.3
improvement to be good
The child’s health needs are not met. Staff are not proactive in engaging health professionals in the child’s care planning. For example, on several occasions, the child has told staff that they want to stop vaping. Staff have not sought any advice or support from health professionals and have not included this in the child’s care planning.
p.3
improvement to be good
Staff help the child to access support for their emotional well-being. When the child has struggled to access direct support from the provider’s in-house psychologist, staff have been creative in providing alternative approaches. As a result, the child is engaging in work to better understand their emotions.
p.3
improvement to be good
There is limited progress in improving the child’s bedroom, and it is not maintained to an acceptable standard. The manager and staff encourage the child to clean and tidy their room, and they have made attempts to have a new carpet fitted. However, they have not explored all options to improve the standard of living.
p.3
improvement to be good
Risk management strategies to safeguard the child have not been implemented in a timely manner, and strategies are not identified to address all the child’s known risks. For example, there are no effective risk management strategies in place to reduce the risks associated with the child vaping. This was raised as a requirement at the last inspection. Inspection report for children’s home: 2628010 4 There is a strategy in place to monitor the child’s mobile phone use to reduce the risk of exploitation. However, the delay in implementing this strategy resulted in a further incident involving the child. Strategies identified to address online exploitation are not recorded in the child’s plans. This does not support staff in keeping the child safe.
p.3
improvement to be good
Staff understand the child’s risks. The manager ensures that all staff who are new to the home are made aware of the child’s current risks and plans before they work with the child.
p.4
improvement to be good
Incidents of the child going missing from the home have decreased. When the child goes missing, staff search known areas and attempt to contact them. However, on one occasion, staff did not follow the child’s plans to report them missing within the agreed time frame.
p.4
improvement to be good
Staff have failed to record some significant incidents involving the child. This does not allow for effective management oversight of the child’s current risks and how to support them.
p.4
The effectiveness of leaders and managers: requires improvement to be good
The manager knows the child well and has a positive relationship with them.
p.4
The effectiveness of leaders and managers: requires improvement to be good
The manager is not proactive in ensuring that staff are meeting all the child’s needs. Shortfalls identified at the last inspection have not been addressed. This has affected the child’s progress.
p.4
The effectiveness of leaders and managers: requires improvement to be good
The manager knows the team of staff well and understands their individual strengths and areas for development. When there are issues with staff practice, the manager addresses these through supervision and team meetings. Staff say they feel well supported and speak positively about the manager.
p.4
The effectiveness of leaders and managers: requires improvement to be good
The manager has worked to streamline the child’s records. This makes them more accessible for both the child and staff. However, the child's plans lack updates and do not include all relevant information regarding their needs. Inspection report for children’s home: 2628010 5
