Inspection of Barneys 4 Church Lane, Barnburgh, Doncaster DN5 7EZ

p.1

This provision does not meet requirements

Although leaders ensure that staff are trained in some aspects of safeguarding, staff are not aware of the correct procedures to follow should they have concerns about a child's welfare. Furthermore, staff are not aware of what to do if they have concerns about the conduct and suitability of another member of staff. This compromises children's safety and welfare. There are no arrangements for the supervision and training of staff to target or drive improvement. This leads to a weak understanding of staff's role in keeping children safe.

p.2

This provision does not meet requirements

Despite these weaknesses, staff create a welcoming and friendly environment, where children feel happy. Children arrive after their busy school day with enthusiasm, excited to greet their friends and staff. Staff know the children well and take a genuine interest in their thoughts and ideas. Children are confident, form close relationships with staff, and develop a strong sense of belonging at the club.

p.2

This provision does not meet requirements

Children fully immerse themselves in what the club has to offer and show high levels of engagement and enjoyment. Staff are highly successful at creating a vibrant and exciting environment for children to attend. They understand that children have different needs and take this into account when planning resources and activities. For example, older children enjoy being creative and decorate an area within the club for their dolls. Younger children work together to build a large train track, joining the pieces and adding sections to make it even bigger.

p.2

need to do better?

n Staff can identify the signs and symptoms that may indicate a child is at risk of harm or abuse. However, staff are not aware of the correct procedures to follow to report any concerns they may have about a child. In addition, staff do not have a good enough understanding of the whistle-blowing procedure. Consequently, staff do not have a strong enough understanding of how to protect children in their care if they are concerned about their welfare. n Leaders place a strong emphasis on recognising and prioritising staff's well- being. Staff comment that they enjoy working at the club. They complete mandatory training, including paediatric first aid. However, the supervision arrangements for staff are ineffective. Staff do not have opportunities to receive support, guidance and coaching on their practice. As a result, the provider is unable to identify staff's individual development and training needs.

p.2

need to do better?

n Overall, staff actively support children in leading healthy and active lifestyles. Physical activity is a daily feature of the club, which promotes children's overall well-being. At snack time, staff offer a variety of healthy food options, including

26 June 2025 fresh fruit. However, staff do not consistently provide children with drinks that are healthy and nutritious, to promote the development of positive life-long habits. n Children are confident and behave very well. They are polite and use good manners. Children show consideration for each other and play together in team games. Staff are positive role models and have high expectations for children's behaviour. They encourage children to share and play together well. Children receive praise and encouragement for their efforts. n Partnerships with parents and carers are strong. Leaders and staff build positive, trusting relationships with families. Parents receive regular updates about the activities their children take part in and appreciate the daily feedback shared at pick up time. n Overall, staff actively promote children's independence. They encourage children to take responsibility for everyday tasks, such as putting away their coats and

bags when they arrive. The environment is thoughtfully organised to support this independence, enabling children to make their own choices about what they want to play with. Older children enjoy the responsibility of helping younger children. Leaders are considering further ways to promote independence at snack times. n Staff have established a strong partnership with the on-site host school. They stay informed about what children are learning in class and offer children homework clubs each day. Regular communication is maintained with school staff, and messages from teachers are passed on to parents. Effective collaboration with senior leaders at the school helps to create a positive and consistent link between the school, parents and the club.
